Can't unlock keychains to change password

OK, I need help resetting keychain passwords. The story so far is that my girlfriend forgot her administrator password. We reset it using the OSX install disk. Next time she logged on to Mail she was asked for her keychain password - which was the same as the admin password she'd forgotten. Attempts to change the keychain password have failed because they're locked (so didn't change automatically) and won't unlock without the original password: Catch-22. I have tried logging in as root but can't figure out how to unlock her keychains from there.

Just for completeness, here are the messages I get when trying keychain first aid:
Verification started
Checking keychain configuration for Chris Lisle (user ID=501)
Home directory is /Users/chrislisle
Checked login keychain
Checked password for ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain
Password for ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain is not the same as login password, so keychain can't be unlocked automatically
Unable to read settings for ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain
Checked default keychain
Checked keychain search list
Checked contents of ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain
Checked contents of ~/Library/Keychains/Microsoft IntermediateCertificates
Problems were found; you should choose the Repair option to fix them

Any ideas? I'm no expert so the more explicit and idiot-proof, the better.

You may have to delete your Keychain and crate a new one...

You can delete it and manually create a new keychain.

When you delete the keychain, you have two options:

? Delete References removes the keychain from the keychain list but does not remove the keychain file from your disk. If you remember your password later, you can recover the items stored in the keychain by choosing File > Add Keychain and opening this file.
? Delete References & Files removes the keychain from the keychain list and removes the file from your disk. You might choose this if the file is corrupted or damaged in some way and you don't want to recover it

1 Open Keychain Access, located in Applications/Utilities.
2 Click Show Keychains if the keychain drawer is closed, then select the keychain you want to delete.
3 Choose File > Delete "keychain" (the command will show the name of the selected keychain).
4 Click Delete References or Delete References & Files.

To Create a Keychain

1 Open Keychain Access, located in Applications/Utilities.
2 Choose File > New Keychain.
3 Type a name and choose a location for the keychain, then click Create.
4 Type a password for the keychain.
5 To make the new keychain your default keychain, choose File > Make Default.

New keychains are set to lock automatically. To change this setting, select the keychain in the keychains drawer and choose Edit > "Change Settings for Keychain 'login'." (The name of the keychain in the menu matches the name of the selected keychain.

I am having the same problems as the user who wrote the original problem. I have tried what you suggested, but cannot even delete the keychain. My wife's computer is at 10.2.8 and I am absolutely confused and at my wits end. She recently changed her .mac password but claims that she did not change her system password. Her system admin password does seem to be the same but is apparently now different than her keychain password. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
