..Then it seems to be a camera problem.
I'd disconnect the camera's battery - though this may lose the date and time, which would afterwards need to be reset when you re-attach the battery, to allow proper importing of any material shot after this - and then leave the camera sitting for 15 or 30 mins, to see if removing all power will reset its FireWire ("i.Link") port.
Then re-attach the battery and reset the date and time,.
Go through the menus (..I don't have a 14, so I don't know exactly what the menus show ..ah, but, of course,
I can download one here..) ..and I see that the instruction book says (page 105):
"..(3) Press FN to display PAGE1.
(4) Press MENU to display the menu.
(5) Select VIDEO EDIT in , then press
EXEC (p. 133)."
..which is pretty much what's described
on Dan's page.
So I'd set the camcorder to 'Player' mode, make sure that 'i.Link' is selected, turn OFF the Infra-Red (IR) control, connect the camera to your Mac via FireWire (i.Link), open iMovie, then do those menu settings (above), and see if the camera is then recognised.
If you haven't got the instruction manual to hand, I suggest downloading it from that link, above.
