iTunes locks up while syncing with 64 bit vista

I recently got a new computer, and upgraded from x86 XP to Vista 64-bit edition, and afterwards have been having problems with itunes. Itunes works perfectly by itself, and my ipod works perfectly too. However, whenever I attach my ipod to the computer to try and sync my music back up (as I haven't since I had it on XP), itunes locks up. My computer recognizes the ipod as an external hard-drive, and even has that box come up that asks me if "I would like to scan and repair it", which I always say "no" to. After I manually remove the ipod, itunes unlocks and continues working as if nothing happened.

I have all the latest upgrades for vista, and the latest version (7.6) of itunes. I'm happy they finally addressed the 64-bit edition of vista, but itunes still can't recognize my ipod to sync up my music and podcasts!!

Does anyone else have this problem, or had it and now have a solution? Should I try resetting my ipod (and if so, how - since itunes can't even see it!). I've already reinstalled itunes, and everything else works perfect with vista, so it's not an installation issue. Thanks for your help.

For God's sake it's hard to sign up for this forum!
Just gotta say that I've got the same problem and can't find any help anywhere on the internet!
I even took my iPod to the apple store and the most help they could muster was "yeah, you got yourself a software issue".
I know my iPod works on other PCs and Macs, and occasionally I can get mine, after a restore on another computer, to sync a few songs.

Strange, it doesn't work again. It worked since my last post, up til 3 days ago and now the old problem has returned. It used to sync with no problems and now it locks up iTunes and my computer whenever connected. The only thing that I have changed in the meantime, is I let Windows access the same folder where my itunes music was stored, so I'm gonna check and see if that had anything to do with it...

update

Since my last post, I have tried many different things to get it to work (still doesn't), but these are my findings so far:

I cannot view any ipod on my vista computer, not just my own ipod. However, my ipod can be read fine on my girlfriend's XP computer. If I wanted her shi**y music (haha, just kidding babe), I could even sync with her library.

I reformatted the ipod disk with the Windows installation CD (as "my computer" locks up just like iTunes while the ipod is connected, then return to normal when it is disconnected), but that didn't fix the issue.

I found that if I left the ipod connected for over half an hour, it would finally show up in itunes as a corrupted ipod, and in Windows as a corrupted external drive. Neither itunes nor Windows could successfully restore/reformat the ipod after detection. Both would attempt for 20 minutes and finally say it was unsuccessful. Once disconnected, had to wait another half an hour for either to see ipod again.

After doing this about 5-6 times, the ipod eventually reset and had the basic font and displayed in 5 or so languages that it needed to be restored before I could access the main menu or anything again. At this time, my computer and itunes recognized the ipod immediately, but again neither could restore or reformat it.

So, I took it to my girlfriend's XP computer and it restored it with no problems, at which the entire process started over again, where "my computer" and itunes lock up when the ipod is connected. And so basically I have accomplished nothing other than eliminating my options for fixing it. Oh, and I found many other forums online where people had the EXACT SAME problem with itunes and "my computer" locking up when the ipod was connected, then fixing immediately after disconnecting. Can anyone help me further than this?!?!

*update 2*

Apparently after I gave up on Apple and bought a new $250 80 gig Zune, my ipod started to work again. Doesn't that just figure. It may help some other people that I tried moving it around to different USB slots on the back of my computer before, with no avail. However, this time I decided to give it one last shot before I ebayed my ipod, and tried one of the front slots on my desktop, and it worked. Could have been a fluke, or could have been b/c the slots in the back weren't running with enough power or something? Oh well, problem solved, and itunes notices my ipod and syncs with no problems.

Anyone want an 80 gig not-opened Zune? By they way, from a completely objective opinion, the iTunes program is about 10x better than Zune Software, and a **** of a lot easier to operate. It also takes up a lot less resources while running. Sorry Apple, you have kept a customer only because your competitor makes ****** software.
