Can't print tabloid on Canon iR C2620 printer...

Here are my specs:

I have a 24" iMac (purchased about a month ago) running the latest version of Leopard and the Adobe CS3 Suite.

I am printing to a Cannon iR C2620 ImageRunner networked printer.

I can no longer print tabloid sheets on this printer from the CS3 Suite (Acrobat, Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop)

I can, however, print tabloids to a Phaser 7300 color printer from CS3.

Makes no sense. I could print everywhere fine when I was on 10.4, so I assume this is a Leopard issue, but I wanted to post here to see if this had been encountered by anyone else. It's a huge inconvenience and I have no idea how else to troubleshoot.

The Canon drivers all stop at OSX 10.4, and Leopard has a new way of handling printers (supposed to be easier...) so again, I'm stuck.

Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm having this problem on my Canon iR C3200 as well, and I can't print color either. Actually, I can't print anything except b&w letter sized, which, needless to say, is a huge inconvenience.

I've scoured Canon's website and downloaded everything I think might help, and I've reset the setting and reinstalled the printer to no avail. Everything was fine on 10.4, and now nothing.

Any advice will be immensely appreciated.

I don't have any tabloid paper to test this, but I did test that the driver supports the size (11 x 17) and it does appear to work. Here's what I did...

First of all, the Mac has the Canon PS Driver v1.80 installed, which works fine on Leopard. Note that this driver is just for the imageRUNNERs that are using the internal Canon printer board, not the optional external EFI imagePASS controller.

I created a Tabloid document in InDesign CS3. I then chose to print it with the iR C3380 (we don't have a iR C2620) set as the printer. I then selected Setup and set the paper size to 11 x 17. Then I clicked print and the job went and printed on the copier, albeit on A3 paper which is the closest metric size to Tabloid.

So it seems that printing on tabloid is still functioning on Leopard. What happens when you try to print on tabloid?

Your problem sounds like the driver has not installed correctly. First of all, delete the printer queue you currently have and then download the v1.80 of the Canon PS driver. When you run this installer, it gives you the option to uninstall (when it shows Easy Install). After you uninstall, run the installer again. This will add the necessary files to the Mac.

After you restart, you need to add the printer again. Make sure you select More Printers and then select Canon IP (PS). Input the ip address of the iR C3200 and enter a queue name of LP. Click Add to complete the installation.

Once the queue has been created, check that the printer is using the correct ppd. In the Print & Fax printers pane, select the iR C3200 and then in the right pane, check that the Kind section shows iR C3200 CanonPS. If this is the case, then it should be ready to test your colour printing.

If the iR C3200 CanonPS is not shown for Kind, then please reply with what is displayed.

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately this didn't work. I downloaded the new driver (1.81 I think it was) and followed your directions. The Kind shown was differntly (iR 5000-6000) but I changed it in the driver selection tool. When I tried to print anything (b/w, color, whatever) the printer would pause itself over and over again and nothing would print. When I went back and installed the printer as AppleTalk the b/w functionality returned so I can at least print, but still no color.

Since the Kind is setting to the iR5000-6000, then it indicates that the driver software cannot determine which model of Canon you are connecting to. This can be due to your Canon iR C3200 using the EFI (Fiery) imagePASS print controller. If you look at the machine, the imagePASS is a white rectangular metal box that attaches to the back of the copier and has two cables that connect to the copier.

If you have the imagePASS, then you cannot use the Canon driver. You will need the the driver for the imagePASS you have, such as the imagePASS-C1.

If you don't have the imagePASS controller, then the other setup you may have is the Canon board, however you may not have the PostScript printer kit installed, as it was an option in some regions. This would mean that you would have to use one of the Gutenprint PCL drivers, which don't print in colour. Can you tell me when you create the AppleTalk queue, which PPD you (or the system) select.

Ok, I do have the imagePASS. I downloaded drivers for it (I think) but now I don't see them in the list of available drivers to choose from. Do I need to set it up as an Apple Talk printer?

You don't have to use AppleTalk. In a mixed environment I would recommend you use IP. The imagePASS support LPR and Port 9100, which the Windows machines will use as a default. To create the printer, select IP Printer and change the menu to HP JetDirect. Then enter the ip address of the copier, the queue will be disabled, and then for Print Using, change this to "Select a driver..." and in the search menu type 'Canon iR'. You could see the iR C3220/2620-C2 v1.x. Select this and click Add.

When I create the Apple Talk queue it selects Generic PostScript Printer for me.

Sometimes this can occur even when the driver is installed. But it could also indicate that the driver you installed doesn't match the printer/RIP you are connecting to. You can either print a config from the imagePASS to check what you actually have or opens its web page by typing its ip address into your browser.

I just wanted to chime in to say that this worked for me. We've got a Canon iR C3200 with the imagePASS C1 and a few machines running Leopard.

Used IP Printing, chose HP JetDirect - Socket, entered the IP address with Queue blank and put in the printer description and location. It picked Generic Postscript Driver so I manually selected "Canon iR C3200-C1 PS Ver2.1" (downloaded from http://downloads.canon.com/cpr/software/imagepass/imagePASS-C1v2.1PPD_IntelMacOSX.hqx ).

It prints just fine, but a number of the advanced features don't seem to be easily accessible or work properly. Duplex printing, for instance, doesn't seem to work and I don't see anywhere to explicitly send a print job in B&W if I don't want to print 500 "color" pages just because there's a color header logo on a document that's otherwise just text.

Pretty disappointed with Canon's support on this, both from a functionality standpoint and documentation on how to even get this limited set of features working.

The features should be easy to find if the installation has worked correctly.

From the Print dialog, you should be able to change to the Printer Features menu. Within here is the sub-menus for accessing a number of the imagePASS features.

The duplex option is located under Layout > 2-sided Printing. The b&w should be under the ColorWise tab, shown as Grayscale.

If you don't see Printer Features or ColorWise, then your driver installation has failed so it will require more tweaking.

I have the same problem with 2-sided printing.

Running a G5 PowerPC with 10.5.2. Using Acrobat 8 Professional and printing to a networked Canon IR 2880 using IP. This is a mixed environment.

Used the UFR II installer. All options work fine except for 2-sided printing.

In the layout section 2-sided is grayed out. In the Finishing-->>Print Style section the option for 2-sided printing is grayed out.

All other options are available. Tried this with various PDFs with the same result. Printing 2-sided Word documents is not a problem.

May 17, 2008 4:46 PM in response to dporter

The 2-sided printing selection can be affected by the page setup. The Canon UFR2 and PS driver have predetermined paper sizes that are supported. If you have something selected that is not in this list, then the finishing option is not available.

The fix is simple. With the document open in Acrobat 8 select File > Page Setup. Take notice of the Paper Size. Since you are in the US, it probably says US Letter. Now, in the Format For menu, change this from Any Printer to the iR C2880. Now you will see that the Paper Size has changed from US Letter to Letter. Not much of a change but enough to stop the option being available. Now you should find the 2-sided option is available under the Finishing tab.
