Vodafone mobile connect connection problems

First a cautionary tale. I ran Vodafone mobile connect version 2.06 and the Huawei 220 modem satisfactorily from January 2007 until 6th December when I foolishly attempted to update to version 2.07 something. My advice to anyone is that if you get any version of VMC running, cross your fingers and don´t change anything, including installing updates to the program. I think that the UK website may have backtracked from 2.07 to 2.06 which is what I found yesterday. Certainly it doesn´t take you to 2.08.05.04 which was the latest thing in mid January 08. By now they may have moved on a few versions!!

On rebooting and trying to open the 2.07 program on 6th December I got the message that "An exception of Nil Object Exception could not be handled" which I eventually learnt meant that there was probably a problem with the VMC programming. People all over the world seem to have been getting this message since September, judging by the google search for this. My Vodafone "support" staff in Spain kept offering improbable explanations which merely demonstrated a lack of understanding of their own product and macs ("Please right click on your mouse) before consistently putting the phone down. After contacting Vodafone Public relations, I did get some help and was told to install version 2.08.05.04, which I have now done numerous times without success.

When I click on the Vodafone icon, it bounces a few times, shows briefly in the top bar as opening and then disappears. It does not appear in Force Quit, but then it never did after the first week even when the 2.06 version was working. Throuhgout all this the machine seems to have retained a memory to use both dial up and high speeds as appropriate, necessary as I don´t live in a 3G area.
.
Working through Network Preferences I have now set the phone number and password, and apparently get through the authentication process. The program then closes and I am told it could not negiotiate a connection and to check my settings. On looking in more detail it is timing out because it cannot negotiate an id request and closes because no internet protocols are running.

I´ve reached a dead end with Vodafone who say I should take the computer to Apple at my expense. I don´t seem to have any other problems with programs apart from this one, and the Huawei software would also seem to work, except I cannot enter all the security settings. It seems to me to be clearly a question of settings, not a Mac problem, and if Vodafone hadn´t released 2.07, which seems to have had a very short relaease life, I wouldn´t have a problem anyway.

Has anyone got any suggestions, please? I´m operating way out of my comfort zone here!! I apologise in advance for not responding promptly to any replies, but the nearest ciber cafe is about 10 miles away, so all this is not very convenient!! Thanks in advance.

Here I am,
reading Apple discussions I found the solution,
I've downloaded Huawei drivers @: http://njdi.net/HuaweiIntelApp.zip
Install.
I followed the instructions in the read file, add the conf in the network preference and apply.
Open the app Huawei, don't change anything, insert in case your pin and connect.
It works, I'm using the internet key E172.
I hope to be usefull.
Good Luck!

Thanks, but it is now three months without a solution, and I have stopped paying Vodafone. They have graciously offered a rebate of one month´s internet charges, rather less than the time it took them to even start offering solutions and not allowing anything forthe time and expense of me taking the computer into their shops at their request, only for them not to bother talking to me. or the other hours spent hanging on while they waited to put the phone down on me (about 20 times). They also are not sending bills. Apparently they are sending messages to my vodafone e mail address, but since that stopped working months ago, that isn´t getting us anywhere either.

I hope things go ok with you. As for me I am exploring the possibility of unlocking the modem and going to Orange or Movistar

Well I finally got my modem unlocked, but although the modem light and program window show that it is getting good reception, and that the sim card is being recognised, it still can´t actually communicate with the network and I get a series of error messages telling me that it´s not possible to connect the modem. It is now being used with the telefonica movistar service in Spain and they say it´s a problem with the computer setting. I suspect that something was changed with the duff vodafone software and the various de-installations ahven´t removed this wrong setting, but I´ve noidea where to look. Anyone got any ideas?
