Delete and Reinstall AOL for MAC OS X

I have been unable to find out how to delete and reinstall AOL for MAC OS X. No one at AOL online help has any confidence. Can anyone explain how to delete without losing personal filing cabinet? Thank you .John

Thank you again for all your efforts.
The answers your questions are as follows.
I was only accessing AOL from 10.2.8.
Path to data with 5 items is HD > Desktop Folder Mac OS 9(alias) > Data > 5 items
Path to data with 3 items is HD > Data created Jan 2004 not dragged from 5.0.
The 3 items in the trash were dragged there from the new AOL folder accessed from Shared. I had forgotten , in all this confusion, that I can put these 3 items back individually . They are no longer in a single file.
The original address book on the AOL toolbar is accessible and contains all the old addresses.
The ‘Data 23/9/05’ is a folder just as you suggest but there is no Dictionaries folder.
I use ‘Auto AOL’ as this is the way I have always accessed emails and have them saved straight in the filing cabinet. I did not know of a better method.
When I double click on Hard Drive and the window opens, there is NO users folder listed. The only way to access ‘Users” is to get it from ‘Find’
So we have access to the old address book and favourites, but , to date, not the filing cabinet.
If there is any possibility of retrieving the old emails, I would certainly be very glad.
And still AOL is quitting, this time as soon as I went to the online mailbox. Also emails are not being stored in the filing cabinet even though in AOL preferences this option has been chosen.

I am unable to scroll to the bottom of the HD window which is why the bottom 2 items, one of which was 'Users', were not in view until I reduced the total number. Any other window allows me to scroll to the bottom of it. I have never come across this problem before.
The items I removed were some downloads which were in the wrong place and no longer needed.

EDITED

John,

For now, I want you to stop using "Auto AOL".

Open AOL Preferences > Auto AOL > UNCHECK ALL options.
Move to: AOL Preferences > Mail > CHECK "Save the mail I read" & "Save the mail I send".
Move to: AOL Preferences > Filing Cabinet > CHECK "Automatically delete items in my filing cabinet".
Below that you will see "Delete after", and under "Delete after", there are 5 contextual menus. Select "Never" for all 5.

EDIT: MAKE SURE YOU CLICK OK!

Now sign off & quit AOL.

#1 HD > USERS > SHARED > AOL > Masterclassmh's Filing Cabinet (25.9.05)

#2 HD > USERS > SHARED > AOL > DATA > Starcott's Filing Cabinet (3.6.04)

#3 HD > USERS > SHARED > AOL > Starcott's Filing Cabinet (25.9.05)

# 4HD > DATA > Starcott's Filing Cabinet (3.6.04)

#5 HD > DESKTOP FOLDER > DATA > Starcott's Filing Cabinet (19.1.04)

#6 DESKTOP > Starcott's Filing Cabinet (23.9.05)

Move # 2 (Starcott's Filing Cabinet) to:
HD > Desktop Folder > HERE

Put # 3 (Starcott's Filing Cabinet) in the trash DON'T EMPTY

Move # 4 (Starcott's Filing Cabinet) to:
HD > Desktop Folder > HERE

Move # 5 (Starcott's Filing Cabinet) to:
HD > Users > Shared > AOL > HERE

Put # 6 (Starcott's Filing Cabinet) in the trash DON'T EMPTY

Now what is still in:
HD > Users > Shared > AOL > Data THIS FOLDER?

What is still in:
HD > Data THIS FOLDER?

What is still in:
HD > Desktop Folder THIS FOLDER?

Have followed all the instructions.
We now have

HD > USERS > SHARED >AOL > DATA > access nos and address book

HD > DATA > access nos and address book

HD > DESKTOP FOLDER > I did not know which desktop folder you meant. I had to put the 2 starcott's filing cabinets into 2 different new folders as they both have the same name. They are both still in their own folders.

The 'mail sent' and 'incoming mail' boxes now contain some very old emails, not the latest ones. Hope this helps.

John,

We'll take it one step at a time.

You now have,
HD > USERS > SHARED >AOL > DATA > access nos and address book

Do you have an additional file titled Address Book, in:

HD > Users > Shared > AOL?

For some reason, I'm having some connection problems today. I think it's my phone line. I hope I can stay with you. If I don't seem to be responding, hang in there, I'll do my best.

Okay John!

I think we're making headway!

Just a reminder. When you are deleting and moving these files & folders around, you should not be signed on to AOL, and also "Quit" the AOL application.
I know your Trash is probably getting bloated, but don't empty it quite yet.

Put this "Data" folder in the Trash:
HD > USERS > SHARED >AOL > DATA > access nos and address book

Put this "Data" folder in the Trash:
HD > DATA > access nos and address book

Swap the locations of these two files:

#1 HD > Users > Shared > AOL > Starcott's Filing Cabinet (19.1.04)

#2 HD > Desktop Folder > Starcott's Filing Cabinet (3.6.04)

To do that, just pull #1: Starcott's Filing Cabinet (19.1.04), to the Desktop. NOT into a folder on the Desktop.
Then move #2: Starcott's Filing Cabinet (3.6.04), to:

HD > Users > Shared > AOL > HERE

Leave Starcott's Filing Cabinet (19.1.04), on the Desktop for now.

Load AOL, sign on, and see if your desired Emails are back in your filing cabinet.
Also make sure your "Address Book" is correct.

Once we get your AOL files/folders sorted out, we will deal with the quitting problem.
But you shouldn't need to restart your computer, when AOL crashes.

Ali

I have worked my way through each step but was unable to do this
Then move #2: Starcott's Filing Cabinet (3.6.04), to:

HD > Users > Shared > AOL > HERE

I had placed 2 versions of starcott's filing cabinet with same dates and same names in separate folders on the desktop but was only able to put one of them into AOL.

The filing cabinet still only contains some very old emails from using AOL 5.0 on OS 9.2. There is no sign of our latest emails. In the middle of the list of mail sent is a blank email form with 'data folder' as the subject, adressed to starcott with a !K attachment as a download, dated 19.1.04. I think this was from way back when we were told by AOL agents to post our own data folder to ourselves to save it.

I still have a filing cabinet on the desktop dated 23.9.05.

The address book and favourites are the latest versions.
When AOL crashes, I am unable to get online again without restarting.

John,

From your post:
#2 HD > USERS > SHARED > AOL > DATA > Starcott's Filing Cabinet (3.6.04)

I directed you to:
Move # 2 (Starcott's Filing Cabinet) to:
HD > Desktop Folder > HERE

That is the one I want you to put:
#1 HD > Users > Shared > AOL > HERE

Did you do this below, as I directed?

#1 HD > Users > Shared > AOL > Starcott's Filing Cabinet (19.1.04)
To do that, just pull #1: Starcott's Filing Cabinet (19.1.04), to the Desktop. NOT into a folder on the Desktop.
Then move #2: Starcott's Filing Cabinet (3.6.04), to:

HD > Users > Shared > AOL > HERE

Leave Starcott's Filing Cabinet (19.1.04), on the Desktop for now.

Were is Starcott's Filing Cabinet , Dated 3.6.04, now?

You wrote: "... I still have a filing cabinet on the desktop dated 23.9.05...."
Leave that there, for now.

And "...adressed to starcott with a !K attachment as a download, dated 19.1.04..."
Have you tried to download & open that attachment?

Ali,

No.2 Starcott's fc 3.6.04 was moved from its own desktop folder to AOL
There is also No.4 Starcott's fc 3.6.04, originally

HD > Data > Starcott's fc.

This was moved as instructed into its own desktop folder, where it remains.

I am unable to put the 19.1.04 filing cabinet onto the desktop because the 23.9.05 filing cabinet is there and they have the same name.

The e-mail page in the middle of 'Sent Mail':

The attachment could not be opened because "That file is not currently available".
