Outlook won't shut down properly

Hi Roy, that solved the playback issues but my other problem is still here...

Since upgrading to iTunes 7.6 is that Microsoft Outlook 2003 won't shutdown properly. Regardless of whether I click on the close program icon of choose File|Exit the interface closes but Outlook continues running in the background and the user interface is unresponsive... I have to open the task manager and use End Process to close Outlook.

I verified iTunes 7.6 and/or QuickTime is the cause by uninstalling iTunes, QuickTime, the bonjor service, etc. and then rebooting, launching Outlook and then exiting Outlook. With iTunes, QuickTime, etc. removed Outlook closes properly. Once I reinstalled iTunes 7.6 the problem returned.

I enjoy my new iPhone G3 but this Outlook 2007 file corruption is unacceptable. At first I thought it was Mobileme but it is as people on this discussion say - the addin. Just today, Outlook has complianed 5 times that it was not closed properly and the OST file corrupted. Even if there was a sequence of events we could follow to work around but I am seeing NOTHING on the subject.

Ok, try this open Outlook and go to the Tools menu, then select Options, then click the options tab and click the Advanced options button. Next click the COM Add-ins button then uncheck the box next the iTunes Outlook Addin and click Ok.

So far I haven't had any problems with PST file corruption but this issue has kept me from replacing my old PDA with an iPod Touch (the iPhone just isn't and option for me).

I'm having the same/similar problem, though no file corruption to date (fingers crossed). Using Outlook 2003 with iTunes 7.7 and synching with iPhone 3G. The add in is preventing Outlook from closing. Outlook.exe keeps running and the process has to be manually ended.

If there isn't a fix soon, the iPhone has to go. I can't continue risking damage to my pst file and also, with it running in the background, it sometimes downloads my email off the server before it gets to the iPhone, rendering it useless as an email device. Disabling the add-in works, but then I can't synch.

I’ve had the same problem with shut down of Outlook after upgrading to the latest version of iTunes. I tried all the above recommended solutions and they only worked a few times. After opening and shutting Outlook a few times I was left with multiple references under the processes tab in task manager and Outlook unable to start-up.

Then I unchecked all references to I-Tunes and Quicktime in the start-up folder and this seemed to help for a day but the problem is back again.

When I completely un-install I-Tunes the problem is gone.

In addition to this problem I started having Windows Media Player Codec problems that seem to coincide with I-Tunes. Now I can’t play media files with .wmp extensions using Windows Media Player. All other functions of WMP work fine for now.

Any suggestions?

I've had this problem with Outlook 2003 and iTunes for quite a while now. My solution was to disable the COM add-in (every time iTunes was upgraded) because I didn't use the contacts/calendar sync. Now, I guess I can no longer do that because I am using an iPhone.

Besides Outlook not closing, I have also seen the messages about mail folder corruption. Will Apple fix this issue? It is very annoying.

Since Apple has not come up with a fix yet and I'm tired of changing the settings in Outlook each time I want to sync, I stumbled upon another workaround. It appears that all "Office" programs such as Word and Excel have the same problem of not shutting down. However, only 1 will remain open so if you run Word and shut it down, it will still run in the background. Outlook will now start and shut down properly. This works well for me as Word does not check for e-mails, etc. while running. If you have limited speed on your computer, this may result in it running slower but it doesn't seem to affect mine. Hope this works for everyone else.

I'd tend to agree with you Razor, IF the problem was actually caused by Apple's software. It looks to me that the flaw is likely to be the way Outlook handles addins - the same problem is caused by other addins. Several antispam programs have the same effect on Outlook, for instance. Possibly the documentation for addins to Outlook is faulty or incorrect.

Also, I've noticed that this problem does not occur on my Vista system, only on the one running XP with Outlook 2003. And, Norton Antispam, which caused the problem on the XP system does not with the Vista system.
