what does enable disk use mean?

could somebody tell me what enable disk use means.

does it have to be on if i want to copy files on to the hard drive of my ipod, or cannot it stay off and i can still copy files?

Ya, enabling disk mode allows you to access the iPod as a disk drive on your system (separate from the part of the iPod used by iTunes). So if you need to use the iPod as an external drive to store files (CAD files, word documents, application installers, etc.) you need to enable disk mode to see the iPod on your computer like a normal disk drive.
If you switch to Manual updating, by default, this also enables disk mode.
