Retrospect quits unexpectedly on a Xserve 2 x 2.8 Ghz Quad-Core

Products:

xserver 2 x 2.8 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon 4 Gb Memmory
3 x 750 Gb HD in RAID 5 mode (internal)
System version 10.5.1 (latest)

HP StorageWorks Ultrium 1840

Retrospect Server 6.1 version 6.1.138 Serial .................

Yesterday I install this by customer on location. Maken 9 scripts in Retrospect, started some scripts works perfect.
This morning i get a error that there was a problem with Retrospect (due to powerfailure or something else)). When I started the script from yesterdayevening it quits unexpectedly. Every script quits unexpectedly.(I repair all permissions) First reboot it quits unexpectedly. I make a new script and save it as a backupfile on the HD it quits unexpectedly. I unstall everything remove pref files, reboot, zap pram install everything again and when i select the Macintosh HD in Sources and then click on subvolume it also quits unexpectedly also the scripts. what to do (i notice that Retrospect is still a PowerPC version an not intel version when i do apple-info?)

Hi

Any clues in the system.log? You can view this in either Server Admin > Logs or Console > Applications/Utilities.

There is no Intel specific version of Retrospect as far as I know. The version that is available should work for both types of processors. Perhaps your issue is related to Time Machine? If you have configured Leopard Server in any other mode other than Advanced then I think you are going to have problems with Retrospect.

http://kb.dantz.com/display/2n/articleDirect/index.asp?aid=9628&r=3.780764E-02

There is also the ACL issue you have to take into account:

http://kb.dantz.com/display/2n/articleDirect/index.asp?aid=8117&r=0.5548517

The fact you have 6.1.138 installed means that you are probably aware of the it. Please excuse me if this is something you already know.

Hope this helps, Tony

No time machine working at all.

Server setup in Advanced mode.

Any help/tips are welcome.

Thanks

Remove Retrospect immediately.

It is terribly unstable in server environments. There are numerous reports of problems with it.

Additionally (or maybe, crucially), the line from the log speaks volumes:

Code Type: PPC (Translated)

This means that you are not running an Intel-native version of the program (if there even is one). As a result everything it does it having to be translated on the fly from PPC code to Intel code. This adds significant overhead and may be the root of your problem.

I don't know if Retrospect has an Intel version. If they don't that's more reason not to use their software. If they haven't issued an Intel-native program after 2-years of Apple shipping Intel-based Macs.

Indeed, a quick dig on their knowledgebase reveals:

The current version of Retrospect for Macintosh uses the Rosetta translation for compatibility with the Intel Macs. We do plan to release a Universal Binary version of Retrospect in the future. IMHO this is not an acceptable statement for what used to be a premier software package for the Mac, and certainly not one that gives me any faith in the product. Would you trust your data to it?

Feb 12, 2008 8:28 AM in response to Peter-Erik van Riet

Encountered the same problem on an Xserve 2x2Ghz Xeon with OSX Server 10.4.11 and Retrospect 6.1.138. And this all of a sudden, after having worked flawlessly for the last 10 months.

More annoying was the fact that OSX server apparently got corrupted. After a restart, OSX Server rebooted in Darwin only. Underneath, the server was working and accessible with Server Admin, but no more GUI on the attached screen.

My conclusion for the time being and reluctantly, after having worked with Retrospect for the last 12 years: Hands off Retrospect until an universal version will be on the market.

Mar 2, 2008 11:09 AM in response to William Martin1

If you are saying Retrospect is no good then what is?!

There are numerous alternatives.

BRU - http://www.tolisgroup.com/
Time Navigator - http://www.atempo.com/
NetVault - http://www.bakbone.com/

Personally I use NetVault, but I'm also running a multi-platform environment, so its cross-platform nature and remote administration are more important to me than they would be for other users. It's overkill for backing up a single server.

In any case I'd recommend any of these over Retrospect.

Mar 4, 2008 7:49 AM in response to Camelot

I'm so glad I saw this thread...I'm looking for a single server backup solution for the sole XServe I support in a mostly Windows environment. From what I can tell there's no way to include the XServe using our current software (Backup Exec) and would desperately like to find a cost effective solution to this dilemma. Would anyone care to share with me the full specs of their configs so I can put some pricing together and go sell it to the boss?

Thanks!
