Numbers export to Excel. Can't change fonts now in excel document

Pretty much the title says it.

Created a spreadsheet in Numbers. Exported to Excel. Now when opened in Excel, I can't change the formatting of the text. Its like it is locked. Secretary tried unlocking the cells. Doesn't work.

Is this a bug? Maybe with the latest update?

Appreciate all the help. I had to quit messing with this for awhile and get some work done. Did a lot more experimenting today and think I found out what happens. if someone else could try this and see if it happens to you, let me know.

1. Start by using a blank template in Numbers.
2. Type a word in several cells
3. Export your work as an Excel file.
4. Open this excel file.
5. While in Excel, highlight a cell with a word in it and click the Apple key-B to make it bold or however you usually make the cell bold.
6. For me, I cannot change the text to Bold.

Now, what I noticed after awhile, is that if I highlight that cell in Excel and then select the font color as "Automatic" in the pallette window, that I can then make this cell font bold.

So now, I go back into numbers and click on the black text color rectangle in the format bar. The color black is actually not highlighted. So, if I have a cell highlighted, then make sure I select black as the text color, then export the file to excel, then I can make that cell font bold in Excel.

So what I have found, at least in Numbers on my machine, is that I must highlight the entire document and select black

or

highlight the entire document in Excel and select Automatic so that I can change the font to bold. (Or for that matter, italic or underline as well.)

I have also found that if I change the font type (for example from Times to Century) in Excel first, (in lieu changing font color to Automatic) that I then can change to bold, etc.

So if I choose a font in Numbers, in order to manipulate it in Excel, I have to change the font type in Excel first or the color.

Is this true for anyone else?

BTW. I did delete the numbers.plist and the numbers cache prior to doing these experiments. Did not reinstall iwork. I have the latest version of iWork and the latest updates on Office 2004.

Thanks.

Hi darrenv,
Yes I concur with your findings. Also, I found after exporting Numbers to Excel doing Format Cells> Font > Bold, the cell does in fact bold the text.

This isn't any fault of Excel nor Numbers. It's just a vendor specific way of doing somethings, neither vendor is wrong. I've found some things don't transfer well from Excel to Numbers, Numbers to Excel, Quattro Pro to Excel, 123 to Excel or Excel to Quattro Pro, Excel to 123, etc. I've found that sometimes Excel items don't transfer well within versions of Excel; is that fun or what.

Sincerely,
RicD
