can't import / place iphotos into InDesign or Keynote

Help - I can't bring photos from my iPhoto library into InDesign or Keynote - I had to email them to myself from iPhoto - which means I end up with duplicate images. I'm able to bring them in MacMail and Word however -

does anyone have a solution? I'm using iPhoto '08 7.1.1 and Keynote '08 4.0.2 and InDesign CS3 5.0.2 - and Mac OS X - 10.5.1

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.1)

jdqsio:

Can't you just drag them from iPhoto into the open window of the other application? As far as Keynote is concerned, click on the Media button in the toolbar and it will let you browse your iPhoto library to select and drag any photo into Keynote. Can't help you for InDesign.

Additonally, see see Terence Devlin's excellent treatis on iPhoto's folder/file structure. It describes several ways to access photos for use outside of iPhoto.

User uploaded file

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Thanks for your response. For Keynote, I had been using the 'choose' command, and couldn't get access to them, but the media button worked perfectly. Thanks - I think I was still caught up in the powerpoint 'place' command idea - not realizing there was another solution.

Drag and drop doesn't work at all for Keynote or InDesign - it really surprised me -

also, I linked to the treatis you mentioned, but it was just a brief response - is there another document you are referring to? thanks

if anyone else knows about InDesign, please respond -

That response is about all there is to know regarding accessing the photos in iPhoto 7 for use outside. Terence does have a more detailed response here: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6486107#6486107

Dragging into Keynote from iPhoto works fine for me. I get a green "+" and red circle with white 1 in it when I start dragging and goes into the Keynote page.

thanks for the response - I had noticed that for several applications - but not so for InDesign - it lets me find the iPhoto library, but its greyed out and can't be selected - I guess exporting images to the desktop is the solution, but it seems like a very clumsy process, especially given how easy it was with the earlier OS and the earlier iPhoto....

perhaps Adobe and / or Apple are working on a fix to this?

thanks

It's a standard feature of the 10.5 dialogue and I've just tested it in Photoshop. I don't have InDesign but this is a OS feature, not an application one, and I cannot imagine that iD doesn't have it.

Your are not surfing through the columns to your iPhoto Library.

On the left of the dialogue is the SideBar: It contains links to

Devices
Shared
Places

and, at the bottom,

Media.

Look under Media...

I thought I was crazy - trying to find what you were referring to in InDesign, but then kept looking around, and realized the best way to do this is to use CS3's Bridge program - which allowed me to get access to iPhoto from there, and even drag and drop if I want to. I'm a new adopter for CS3 and iPhoto '08 - at roughly the same time.

Thanks for your help, and I only wish Apple would make the solutions to these glitches a little more easy to find. I guess its still better than the PC world, however...

hanks for your help, and I only wish Apple would make the solutions to these glitches a little more easy to find.

The question might be phrased: Why don't Adobe make their apps to run like everybody else?

Be very careful with Bridge. Using it to make any changes to the iPhoto Library will corrupt it. Frankly, I'm not sure that it's a solution at all. Be careful and make sure you back up often.
