Slow printing on Lexmark T644

We have a Lexmark T644 on the network as our departmental printer, equipped with a duplex unit. When we received it in January, I tried to set it up with Printer Setup Utility, but the specific model was not listed, so I downloaded the corresponding PPD's from Lexmark's site. I can now send print jobs to it either via AppleTalk or via LPD, with no problems and have full access to all its features from the Page Setup... and Print... menu items.

However, printing is really slow. Output is around 20-25 pages per minute, even worse if using double-sided printing, whereas my PC colleagues get the full 50 ppm output. Needless to say, this has resulted in endless ribbing on why I should change to the "right" computer...

I'm not using anything fancy, such as 1200DPI, enhanced contrast, etc. Is there any way to optimize the Postscript output and speed up printing?

The problem lies in that the default printer resolution in the MacOS setup is 1200 DPI, which causes the printer to have to re-rasterize and slow down. The solution is to change the resolution to 600 DPI and save as the default setup. This problem is recurrent in both Tiger and Leopard, using either the included PPD's or downloading the newest from Lexmark
