Dock has a spinning lollipop - Finder Frozen?

I have an issue that pops up now and then. I haven't seen a consistency with it happening, I have several apps that I use throughout my workday that i have open but not active.

What happens is that I get a lollipop when my cursor is over the dock. Also, the computer becomes sluggish if I use the finder menu. If I click the desktop though and use an app whos window is currently open, i can usually use it without any problem. I've clicked the apple button at the top menu and clicked "force quit" and don't see any problems there. When I try to restart, it gets hung up on exit. Another notable thing, I have my background set to cycle through "abstract" every 5 secs and the background is frozen when this happens, but there is a box in the center that shows a previous image from Abstract. it reminds me of my time in PC land when an app would freeze up and the warning box would show up.

Any ideas? I'll try to note what lead up to the freeze next time.

I have this exact same problem with all the issues that you have described Tim - and you are right... I have tracked it down to being the scrolling desktop background function. When I turn this off in preferences, and simply have a stationary picture it doesnt happen.

This is annoying as I like having the scrolling pictures in my background.

Does anyone know if apple is aware of this problem, and if so so is there a fix for it????
