iPhone won't stop shuffling songs!

Okay, I swear I am not some newbie that cannot operate a mac product but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to stop my iPhones iPod from shuffling when in a playlist (and yes, I have tried hitting shuffle to turn it off, settings etc.)
What exactly is it that I am missing here?

iphone and macbook, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

With a song playing and in portrait view for the song's album art, select the album art to pull up the time remaining indicator for the song.

Is the Shuffle icon to the left of the time remaining indicator on or off?

I had the same problem:

1. Play a song, and get to the screen where you're looking at the album art.
2. Tap once on the screen to display the time remaining:
3. To the right of the time remaining is the shuffle icon, if it's "on" it will be blue, if it's "off" it will be grey. Simply tap once on the icon itself to toggle between the "on" and "off."

If this icon is blue, it will shuffle the songs on that playlist, or album, regardless of whether or not you selected "shuffle" from the previous menu.

Well, I tried this: the shuffle icon to the right was GRAYED out, and the loop icon on the left was BLUE, but iPhone continued to shuffle the tracks, a major problem if you listen to classical music.
