cant select any printer after installing 10.5 and printer driver

I upgraded to 10.5, my printer was fine before this, after upgrading I went to Canon web site and downloaded the driver for my canon pixma mp500, and installed the driver, everything seems to be OK and ask me to restart the computer, after that I searched under my system preference and printer & fax icon, and I get a screen no printer selected, I click on add ➕ and I don't see any printers listed, I click on more printers and I don't get anything, I unpluged the printer cable and re-connected still nothing, I try to print a word doc and I can't still select any printer

Hi. I know this sounds silly, but it happened to me until I figured it out. Please remember to turn on your printer before you attempt to select it under system preferences. You may also have to download an updated driver from your printer's website. Even then, you may find, as I did, that not all of your installed software will work with your printer under Leopard. The only solution to that which I have found is to install Tiger on a separate external HD and select that as your startup disk when you need to use that particular software.
