mutant behavior -- .sbd files?

I have folder on my desktop for all my downloads -- pdfs, software, occasional mp3s, etc. I've had this setup for a couple of years, no problem.

In the last couple of weeks, there's been weird mutant behavior in the folder: the system, or something, is auto-generating files and folders that have the same name as legitimate elements of the folder. The files & folders have a .sbd suffix. Sometimes the files and folders are empty, sometimes they have actual content.

I don't have this problem in any other folder of .docs or photos.

I'm guessing its something I downloaded and/or installed recently.

Any clues about what to look for?

Thanks
EE

sbd is used by Mozilla (Netscape).
"Each mail folder (Inbox, Sent, etc.) is stored as two files; one with no extension (e.g. INBOX), which is the mail file itself (in ‘mbox’ format), and one with an .MSF extension (e.g. INBOX.MSF), which is the index (Mail Summary File) to the mail file. There is an optional folder bearing the mailbox name with an SBD extension that contains any sub-folders."
