eMail Body Not Downloading

Hello,
My iPhone appears to be receiving email properly from my email provider (POP mailbox). However, certain emails I receive display only the header - but do not download the body. In place of the body, I receive this: "This message has not been downloaded from the server." I am not able to read the message nor am I given any option to download the missing text. Obviously, I want to see the message.

Would someone kindly tell me what is happening and how to receive the missing message?

Thank you, Dale

It appears that this is a real issue with the iPhone. On emails sent to me from various individuals (not spam), I am receiving the following message (in lieu of the message body) "This message has not been downloaded from the server." Furthermore, I have no way (workaround) to cause or force the body to be downloaded to my iPhone. Consequently, the value of the iPhone to receive important emails is greatly diminished.

Can someone help? Why is this happening? Is the issue solved with a setting, either on the iPhone or at my email provider? A solution is necessary. Thank you. Dale

Message bodies are not downloaded until you open the folder containing the message. If you have a POP3 account it is possible that the message has been downloaded and deleted from the server by another mail program running on a home or office computer, so the message is gone by the time you are ready to read it. If you have a POP3 account you should make sure that any other computers that access your mail are off or at least have automatic email retrieval disabled.

If you have an Exchange account there really IS an issue. When you set up an Exchange account on the iPhone it gets its settings from the Outlook client on your computer. In some cases this setting doesn't work right on the iPhone. So if you have this problem AND your mail server is Exchange do not set up the iPhone as an Exchange client. Instead, create the account on the iPhone as an IMAP account.

If a message is very larger (probably over 1 MB or so) the iPhone won't download it. This could be why it happens with only some messages.

Finally, if you have it set up as an IMAP account and it still happens you are very unusual, as just about everyone who has reported this problem is using either Exchange or POP3. (Unless it happens on very large messages only).

Thanks for your prompt reply.

In my case, I am on a POP mail server. No other computer was downloading emails at the time (it was shut down). Furthermore, the mail client on my home computer does not delete messages on the mail server until they are one week old.
I do not use Exchange nor Outlook. I am running Mail 3.1 under Leopard 10.5.1.

Here are the characteristics of 2 message in which the bodies would NOT download to my iPhone:
Message A: Short text message with one PDF attachment. Total size 22.4KB.
Message B: Short text message with two JPG photos attached. Total size 510KB.

I continue to ask: Why are the email bodies not downloading?

Thank you,
Dale

I tried your suggestion. Sadly, it does not cause the email attachments (as I previously described) to be downloaded. The processing disk spins for a few seconds followed by "This message has not been downloaded from the server."

FYI, my ISP also offers access to their email server through the Internet. I have been able to confirm that the desired attachments are still on the server and accessible to me through their WebMail - meaning that the desired attachments have not been deleted.

Other suggestions and help please? Thank you, Dale

i am having the same problem with emails not downloading. what is odd is i can open emails and view them, then if i close and reopen the inbox, the same message gets the "This message has not been downloaded from the server." it is intermitent. i went to the apple store and i was told appple is aware of this and is working on a fix? at this point the email system on this phone is not good at all. when trying to reply back to a message, most of the time the mail gets stuck in the outbox trying to send for a long time, until i manually delete it. today, i simply turned off the email feature altogether. can someone tell me when there will be a real fix for these meail problems

I've found two consistent problems here. One, is an operator malfunction, the other connection. The first, I have left POP acct messages in the inbox for reference purposes. However, when I offload them from the e-mail server to the home PC, the download error occurs on the iPhone. Make sense, it can't get the body of the message anymore from the POP. Second, if I am in a area of limited connectivity/signal/throughput I run into the problem on random e-mails. When I get back to a 4-5 bars area, I just hit the refresh when in the e-mail and it seems to get the body content find at that time.
