Headphones / Headphone jack - DOESNT FIT!?!

Why on earth has apple made the headphone jack input on the iPhone so far into the device that only the less than adequate apple in-ear headphones will fit? I bought an iPhone 2 days ago and am generally thoroughly happy with it apart from this apparent design flaw. Can anyone suggest anything?

I have a pair of Sennheiser HD25's which I used to use with my old iPod. The jack wont go into the iPhone far enough for it recognise that I'm using headphones and stop the audio from coming out of the built-in speaker. How annoying!!

I've also tried a normal mini-jack lead to plug into a PA system and it doesn't fit. Apple - what the ****!?

In addition to the adapter that the previous poster mentioned, there are several options of much more "high end" earbuds than what came with the phone that are made specifically for the iPhone with a plug that fits. I have the V-Moda Vibe Duos (shop.v-moda.com), which I love...Ultimate Ears also makes a set that I've read great things about, and I believe that Bose now makes some with a plug that works with the iPhone. The V-Modas have an inline mic and "clicker" to answer calls just like the ones that came with the phone.

Otherwise you can get the adaptor to use the ones you already have.

jamiepost,

The case around the connector to protect the port requires the plug be narrower.

Some users have simply modified the plug on their existing headphones, but I can not recommend that.

Additional at least 3 companies make adapters so that wider plugs can fit. The adapters are not made by Apple, and are sold at other places besides just Apple Stores.

Hope this helps,

Nathan C.

I had the same problem with my Shure headphones...while they aren't the $500 model, at $100 I would like to still be able to use them.

I debated the adapters, etc., but luckily Shure headphones have a thick plastic coating over the piece right above the actual metal part of the pin. I took my pocket knife and made a few clean cuts and removed the outer portion of the rubber leaving the hard underlying layer in place.

They fit snug, but now they work with my Iphone. I had to be careful, but I am glad I modified them so I can now get good quality sound.

the reasoning to it was supposedly a combination of ascetics (moving the jack up higher or making the whole larger would have changed the thickness of the phone), protection (the plug could supposedly get damaged or damage the phone if it was pushed on to hard).

over all, most users just see it as an ascetic choice and in all honesty the phone would look terrible if it was made in a way to accept all head phones. yes slightly annoying but understandable

It's not the end of the world. I'm just disappointed they couldn't fit a normal 1/8" jack in it.

I read your speculation and explanation and it wasn't very convincing. (sorry). I'd like to know what the real story is. Maybe it's something to do with aesthetics, like you say. The real story won't come out for awhile.

It doesn't matter... I waited a year for the price to drop, for the bugs to get worked out, for more storage, etc. I just picked up 16GB and was hoping maybe they'd find a way to fix this, but I gave up waiting. They don't even pack an adapter in the box, which would have been greatly appreciated.

Certainly the coolness of the phone far outweighs this inconvenience about the audio jack. It's just a bit irritating. I'll go and check out the adapter things. Yeah... it would have been nice if they included an adapter. Oh well.

I'm ****** at the head phone jack thing too. They could at least tell you in the time it takes for the credit card to go through for the $500 that the head phone jack is different and you will need to buy an adapter since we were to cheap to add one in.

I have two nice noise canceling head phones that wont work. I did call in when and apple said there wasn't an adapter. Glad I found the form.

thanks
