Feb 20, 2008 10:42 PM in response to Dr rickby teetah111,I have a feeling the program on the 5G is different than the previous video Ipod. I can still watch video through my old cord that hooked to the headphone plug on my old video Ipod, but the 5G seems to want you to have a cord that hooks to the docking port. I'll find out in a little while, as I just bought a docking port TV link on e-bay yesterday. Will report how that goes once I get the cable. -

Teetah,
I think you are a little confused about which iPod are which. 5th Generation iPods are the first video iPods.
Originally Apple released the 30GB and 60GB Video iPods, also known as the 5th Generation iPods (often abbreviated as "5G" here).
After about a year, they slightly updated the line by dropping the 60GB model, adding the 80GB model and improving the line with brighter screens, updated firmware, a search function, etc. So you have the 30GB and 60GB second release of the 5th generation iPods which are often referenced here as "5.5G" model to designate the next version of the 5th generation.
In all of those "5G" models, the video out worked exactly the same. All supported a video out connection through the headphone jack and you could use any A/V cable (although you might have to switch around the colors when hooked to your TV with a generic (non-Apple) one). You can also get video out from the dock connector on the bottom of the iPod.
Now, they released the "Classic" line of iPods which are the second model line to support video along with the 3rd Gen Nanos, the iPhone and the Touch. The "Classic" line, which is also the 6th generation of the main iPod line come in 80GB and 160GB models and in this line video out via the headphone jack is no longer supported. With the Classic line you must get video out via the dock connector on the bottom of the iPod only. In addition, it would appear that the docks and cables that support video out on the Classic line also have some sort of ID built in so that the Classic line knows when they are hooked up and will use them and so will NOT use third part docks and cables and you get that message on the iPod screen about hooking up an Apple accessory.
Hopefully that makes it a bit more clear to everyone what we are talking about.

Mar 15, 2008 11:29 PM in response to Dr rickby June Day,I have a 5th Gen 80 GB IPod and I can see video. Please read my reply relating to connecting to TV on the thread I still have no video on March 16. -
Apr 21, 2008 4:02 PM in response to PTby barangus,Well here's an odd one. I had a 30Gb 5th gen pod and a video cable that worked just fine off the headphone jack (red to yellow trick). The HD died and i got swapped for a refurb at the Apple Store. Now the video cable no longer works. There's not nothing there but the video is totally collapsed - sort of like a macrovision protected videotape. The audio is there but buzzy.
So you say that even a 5.5G pod still should work with a composite cable off the headphone jack? -
Apr 23, 2008 4:00 PM in response to barangusby barangus,Follow up:
So I took the pod to the Apple Store and unfortunately they could not test it because they don't have any TV's in the store nor any of the composite A/V cables (must be too 20th century).
But they cheerfully swapped me out for another refurb and that one, too, will not play composite out the headphone jack. Same symptoms. There's something there but the picture is horribly unstable (yes i have it set for ntsc). Total horizontal hold breakdown. Guess I'll have to get something to play video put the dock to a TV. A Drag. This was so convenient to play slide shows for the parents on their vintage 1990 Sylvania. -
May 30, 2008 4:17 AM in response to Dr rickby davide78,I have a 5th gen 60GB and want to hook upto TV.
Which is better;
Composite to Headphone jack
OR
Composite to dock
is there a difference in picture quality? -
