Can iPhone use SOCKS (not HTTP) proxy to connect to internet?

Does anyone know if there is a way for an iPhone to connect to a SOCKS proxy (such as one run off of another computer)? In my dorm rooms we are not allowed to install wireless routers, but we can use our laptops to "share" our internet connection wirelessly. The iPhone supports HTTP proxies (easy enough to set up on computer) but then can only get data over port 80 (e.g. no email). SOCKS proxies allow data sent over all ports to be routed through another computer.

If there is no way to do this, apple should consider putting it into the next update. It is in the current version of OSX and is very easy to set up.

PC, Windows XP Pro
