no sound on Photo Booth video when recorded

Hi,

I've been using photo booth video recording since Leopard came out, but just last week, when i record video in PB, it has no sound. it show just the video.

How can i get the sound back? I checked my mic volume and it's on and max.

Please help me...

Did you check your sound input through system preferences. I had similar problem in PB. Found my input device was not assigned to my built in speakers. Go to system preferences - sound - input - double check your built in speaker is assigned.

Can you record audio with other apps like iMovie?

If so, installing the Mac OS X 10.5.2 Combo Update may restore your Photo Booth's audio recording capability.

Be sure to repair permissions before you run the installer and again immediately after the restart that completes the update.

If your suggestion does not help him, Janchai Montrelerdrasme can also check to be sure that his System Preferences > Sound > Input shows the audio source he wants to record (perhaps his built-in microphone.)

I am having this issue as well using the latest version of Leopard. My daughter likes to record movies one right after the other (using her webkinz :)) and some movies just don't have any audio. Is there some kind of known condition which will cause photo booth to stop recording the audio when all of the preferences and settings are correct?

Hello all,

As I am sure you know, Photo Booth (PB) is a very basic application that has no menu item that will allow users to set PB's "preferences". Moreover, the only real "setting" menu item it has allows users to Photo Booth > Edit > Auto Flip New Photos. For best results, quit other applications before you record video, and don't try to hurry the process. Wait until your video file is completely saved before you try to review your newly recorded video and then begin another recording.

If you still have the same problem after you have tried everything above and all relevant suggestions from Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight, your software may be damaged.

If PB is the ONLY app that does NOT work properly with ANY app that uses iSight in ANY user account that you test, you can try reinstalling PB. If you need help on how to reinstall, see this post:

If your iSight doesn't work correctly with ANY app in ANY user account after applying all the troubleshooting suggestions, you may need to reinstall your OS.

It would appear that using the in-built microphone causes both Photo Booth and Quicktime to behave erratically.

Alright, I use my MacBook's iSight to record video. When using "Built-in Microphone" as the sound input in System Preferences, Photo Booth videos get recorded without a sound track (as reported by Quicktime's inspector). After setting "Line-In" in System Prefs, the sound is recorded perfectly, and the audio track correctly reported as AAC.

Similarly, when recording video in Quicktime, using "Built-in Microphone" yields the error message "Recording failed because no data was received", unless I set the video encoding method in Preferences>Recording to Device Native. MPEG-4 and H.264 will only work in combination with setting "Line-In" as an input.

Both problems are widely reported in online user communities, and as mentioned, using the in-built mic seems to be the common denominator here.

Until Apple issues a fix *ahem*, the best solution (for me) is to get an external mic and use line-in by selecting it in System Preferences>Sound>Input.

Hi EZ Jim,

I tried your suggestion of reinstalling Photo Booth (PB) using Pacifist, on the theory that PB is the only application where the mic and iSight are not working properly together. My PB was on ver. 2.01 (72) and after the reinstallation using the Leopard disc PB is on ver. 2.0 (70). In any event, I am still not able to record sound with it.

I suspect that the recent OS and firmware updates are responsible for this problem but I can't pin it down as I don't have a Time Machine Backup to go back on. I have read somewhere that someone at the Apple helpline said that recent updates of PB removed the sound recording capability of PB. Can anyone confirm this? If this is true that would be very sad as PB was so great and easy to use as it was (my 3 year old absolutely loved it, particularly the sound capability).

Does anyone have an older configuration where PB is working with sound and could you be so kind and share the details?

After you have reinstalled, repair permissions and then use your Mac's  > Software Update... to get back to the latest version of PB. If Software Update... tells you that new software is available, you should repair permissions again after the updater finishes.

My G5 Mac's PB is ver. 2.01 (72), and it records sound. However, the most current version number might be different for iNtel Macs. I do not believe that sound recording capability has been removed, unless, perhaps, but a three-year-old who has access to your Mac. User uploaded file

Check your  > System Preferences... > Sound > Input to be certain that your iMac's built-in microphone is your selected "sound input device" and that the "Input volume" is set to a high enough level. If so, your PB should record sound with your video. Sound is NEVER recorded when you take a still picture or four quick pictures.

If you have difficulty and need to post back for other suggestions, please let us know whether you have bought Time Capsule and installed the included software.

I have had the same issue-- but only with one video so far. I recorded a couple videos on photobooth, and one of them had no sound. I've tested since then and its recording sound just fine! So its fixed for now, but I have no way of knowing if it will mess up again which is kind of a bummer when recording videos. Maybe I should just not use Photobooth? Several people have pointed out that its only a very basic app, but then, I'm only asking it to do its very basic function. What other programs would you recommend using to record simple videos through the built in isight?

Also, re: flicking the mic. I'd beware of any fix that requires physically flicking your computer-- it might mean there's a loose wire in there or something and it should be checked out.
