HELP!!!! ethernet connection/Linksys wireless router

I am trying to create a setup for my iMac (G4 operating system 10.3.9) and a laptop PC. Since I do not have airport I need to use the ethernet(hard wired from the router) but I can not seem to configure the mac to recognize the Linksys router. The mac connects to the internet with the ethernet cable hooked directly to the cable modem but when I try to hook up the router to make my pc wireless the mac won't connect. The PC picks up the wireless signal but none of the ethernet ports on the router ever light up when I hook up the mac. I checked the ethernet cord and it is good. Someone told me I had to have everything configured exactly right for the ethernet to work with the mac. Anyone out there know the secret? Have tried for days including searching the internet but nothing has worked. Cable company says it isn't their problem, Linksys says it is an apple problem and I can't get any help from apple. PLEASE....somebody help me and I thank you in advance!

No, I know I don't have an airport card which is why I am trying to connect to the mac to the wireless router via the ethernet cord. This is what I thought was "hard wired" instead of wireless. I wanted to use the router as a wireless device for my laptop but be connected to the internet at the same time on the mac through the ethernet connection on the wireless router. Is this not possible?
Thanks.

Welcome to Apple Discussions !!!

It's absolutely possible!!!
I am not an expert in networking, but I did want to share this with you.
I have an iMac flat panel, hooked up to a Linksys wireless router that is connected to a PC two floors up, plus a Mac Mini. Very honestly, the hardest part was not the Mac or the PC, it was trying to figure out the Linksys configuration. We got great help from our son-in-law who actually pulled it off.

All I wanted to say was, I know this can be done.
I'm counting on someone more knowledgeable as to specifics to come along.
I'll keep checking in on your progress . . .

Excuse me Gail,

When I first read your post it looked like you were getting cabled hookup to work but not wireless. Now I see that it is not the case.

It is a configuration problem on the router or a deffective router. My guess is the configuration.

My Netgear wireless wired to my mac works with pc's and macs wired and wireless on the same router at the same time. It did out of the box and I can't seem to make it do what yours is doing.

Post in the Networking and the Web part of the Apple forums.
Perhaps someone there with a Linksys router has better input.

Sorry.

I know it is not a defective router.....the cable people were sure that was the problem but Circuit City tested the router for me and it is working fine. The ethernet cord is not defective either...I tested that. Thanks for the advice to go to the networking forum but as dumb as this may sound, I can't find it. Either I am having a senior moment or this networking stuff has fried my brain. Maybe both. Could you direct me to the best place to post this again?

Thanks for your help!
Gail
