Multi Midi with Software Instruments?

I use Band In A Box and it outputs Midi to core Midi that Logic Express 8 plays but all on one channel.
I have tried the preference for changing to multi midi input but can't seem to see how to assign a software instrument to see the midi channel I want. Can some one please help me.
