MacBook Pro Freezes after successfull 10.5.2 update

I downloaded and installed 10.5.2 last night, and experienced no problems. The installation was smooth. However, this morning my MacBook Pro (2.33 ghz Intel, 2GB Ram) froze twice during normal use. First I was using Safari and the screen froze, no cursor movement, nothing. I had to restart with the power button. Then, a few minutes after the restart, I was composing an email in Mail, and the same freeze happened. No cursor movement.

I have since downloaded the iLife 08 update and Leopard Graphics Update. So far, no problems and no freezes, but its only been a few minutes.

I searched the forum, and didnt see any similar posts. Please let me know if you have this same problem, or if you have heard of any fixes.

Hi,

the fact that Apple cares about customers in this direct way is certainly positive. We don't have to forget on the other hand that the numbers of post on this "freezing" problem are enormous and this should certainly scary them.

The only thing I hope is that the solution is not an hardware solution because otherwise would mean to send the computer to some Apple center. But since the problem was not there at the beginning, hopefully it's solvable via software updates.

Keep writing if the situation changes or improves!

I'm having my MBP in for repairs now for the third time (the first 2 times they couldn't find a solution to the freezes and Kernel Panics i get) - THEY DON'T HAVE A CLUE WHAT'S CAUSING IT!

I've talked for many hours now with AppleCare, running Capture Data etc. and they can't see why i get the freezes. They have replaced ram, and now that the have my MBP for repairs for the third time they say they'll probably replace Logicboard and Harddrive - BUT NOW I READ THAT EVEN THAT DOESN'T HELP!!!

C'mon users of this thread - be harder on apple and call your local Apple Customer Service or whatever to put pressure on them. They don't read these threads. We need a solution NOW - Hardware or software - just fix it apple!

There may be multiple reasons for freezes, and the sitaution when they occur seems to vary. However, a number of people have said, for them, they only occur when the machine is being used in "laptop" mode on battery. For me, this has been the only time I have had freezes. While I didn't think of it before, I can now also say that I was always using the machine in a dim to dark room.

So, for those of you who have had similar situations, again, I refer you to this thread:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1404210&tstart=0

At this time, two people have reported that the freezes stopped when they turned the Keyboard Backlight off.

Based on the first such post, I turned my backlight off yesterday. Last night I did as I always did - work in a mostly dark room, on battery, with the WIFI on. I worked for 2 hours AND NO FREEZE! This was the first time in over two months that I had used the machine for more than 20 minutes without one!

This is interesting... very interesting! Actually I noticed that it happened also to me when I was in dim light. Usually when you type on the MB Pro you always move your hands on the light sensors which allow the Mac to readjust the light intensity of the screen and keyboard. I had the impression that it was freezing in these moments! Maybe it gets crazy if you give to many light inputs!

I did not try it yet but I think the problem could be in that direction. Actually if people with the simple MacBook did not have the same problem the number of possible causes would drastically drop!

I hope the guys of Apple will look at this thread and write down some note on these comments!

Regards

I'm not sure if it's relevant but I too might be able to co-relate my freezing with the light sensor. My typical usage scenario when I have seen the crash is to move from my desk (removing my MBP from AC power) and walk down a dark(er) hallway to another room. I will try turning the keyboard light off before I remove it from power.

nice that it's working for some. But for me the freezes have come both on power supply and battery. Mostly on Power Supply since this is how i use my MBP during daily work and my hands are nowhere near the sensors. I always have my backlit keyboard OFF - never use it. So to me the freezes have nothing to do with the backlit keyboard.

I do not believe that your freeze is the same as the one originally reported.

Have you done an Archive & Install? If so, have you taken your MBP to Apple for them to evaluate? You might have a failing logic board.

I have done all including erase & install...
I just got the MBP back 30 minutes ago and am installing Leopard now on a brand new harddrive and with a new logicboard. So i hope my problems are gone.

But i must say that i don't dare to upgrade all the way up to 10.5.2

Definitely! Do not install 10.5.2 until you have determined that your unrelated hardware issues have been fixed.

That's interesting. I can't say that I have noticed a correlation between freezes and the keyboard backlight but I'm willing to try pretty much anything at this stage.

Under normal circumstances I would be likely (but not certain) to get a freeze if I were typing this on battery, wireless and probably keyboard backlight on. I have turned it off and will leave it that way for the next few days to see what happens.

Time will tell.

Latest update:- Ran freeze free for a total of 9 days until I plugged my Logitech LX 710 wireless keyboard and mouse into USB port. Had a freeze within 30 minutes of the USB being reconnected.

In my case it looks pretty certain my freeze is associated with the USB. Now need to find out if it is just the keyboard and mouse which are giving me problems or if any external device connected to the USB is causing the problem.

Once the system had frozen I was not able to recover and disconnecting the USB did nothing. Had to revert to the good old power reset!!

When I mentioned that I was sending in my laptop (MBP), it was so they could KEEP it. They're not trying to fix it and return it. It's still under warranty (less than a month old), so they're issuing me a new machine . . . which could have the same problem. I can say to all that my freezes happen both on AC power and battery power. It is, also, unrelated to the backlight. So, . . . when they get my computer, they'll keep it and keep working on it until it's fixed since they don't need to do any "gee, hope this fixes it" kind of repairs because of some time constraint to return my machine to me.

FWIW, the problem with your MBP appears to be a hardware problem, unrelated to the original problem posted in the first message in this thread.
