Hot Corners stopped working at startup

I have noticed this hot-corners too. It is a recent thing that my hot-corners go away.

I seem to notice it after I start my machine up from "sleeping". So - I leave work - shut the computer -- bring it home -- open it up (some drives say they are no longer mapped) -- and my hot corners don't work.

I have noticed though - if I switch to another user -- and then back to the orig user (I have multiple users defined) -- then the hot corners work again.

I have not seen anything in the console log that would suggest a process died / came back.

This issue should not be marked as solved. Killing the dock does not fix the issue for me. Neither does disabling spaces (completely), nor does having a USB mouse attached/unattached. Has anyone else found any solutions to this bug besides rebooting?

I have the same issues. A lot of the time (not always) when I bring my computer home from work and turn it back on the hot corners will have stopped working. I use an external monitor at work and I think this might have something to do with it (sometimes the computer continues to think that the second monitor is still attached). I had this problem with Tiger, but it didn't seem to happen as often. I didn't do a clean install of leopard (upgraded from tiger) so that might also have something to do with it.

Anyway, I have fast user switching enabled and if you go to the login screen (you don't have to fully log out) and then sign back in the hot corners start working again. It's the fastest solution that I've found, but still annoying.

Agreed. Not solved. Hot corners work for me except Start Screen Saver. Moving Start Screen Saver to another corner doesn't help. Other Hot Corner actions work.

Friends, I had the same problem and was embarrassed to discover that, at least in my case, a simple restart of the computer is all that was required. You can read my post here:

Same thing is happening for me: Screen Saver will start neither automatically following the configured delay nor upon activating the hot corner. I can activate it by clicking the Test button in the Screen Saver pane of the Desktop & Screen Saver preference pane of System Preferences. Naturally, this is not password protected, so: not an option for me.

While the restart works, it is not an acceptable workaround.

What process controls the Screen Saver startup? Perhaps that can be killed and relaunched.

Does anyone know what process controls the hot corners or screen saver starter? As has been aluded to, there must be something that can be killed and restarted that will get this going again. I had hopes for 'Dock' and for going to the login screen, but neither worked.

I have the same problem sometimes: Hot corners will completely stop working.
I do not have screen saver as one of my hot corners, but not one of dashboard, show all windows, show display and spaces will work.

The problem goes away if I log out and log back in.
I usually notice the problem after I reopen my laptop after closing it without logging out.
I am not sure if that is actually the case or this is just due to my tending to "upper left corner" my way to dashboard everytime I reopen my laptop.

What freaks me out about this is that in one occasion, I logged out and when I logged in I had this "flashing behavior".
The flashing thing only happened for one account: people at the Genius Bar told me this is consistent with the Dock constantly dying and coming back up.
I am not sure if it is related but since killing the Dock may do the trick, who knows?

I DO AGREE that rebooting is not an acceptable work around: I would hate to see MAC OS become like some other operating system from some companies in the Northwest....

Hot corners stop working for me occasionally too. It seems that a reboot is the only thing that fixes it. This is not a viable solution. I don't know if it is related but I also find that I'm not able to restart or shutdown my Mac. Its as if the Finder is having problems.

No one has offered the connection, so I will. I run Windows in Parallels most of the day. I don't know if Parallels might be causing part of the problem, but I thought I'd throw it out there. Anyone else running Parallels when it errors?

I'm not sure how it would affect this, but yes, I am also running Parallels when I have this issue.

I have been following this thread for a few weeks as I too have the problem, and I too believe a reboot is NOT the solution. I have been working on this with some people on a different forum, but posting here just became more relevant. The first connection I made with a person on the other thread is that we were both running vmware fusion. While this is a different virtual machine, perhaps the problem resides in a common way of handling screen savers in the VM. Either way, I turned off my screen saver in my Window VM for now, and have not had the problem yet (which means nothing since it could take weeks to appear).

The second thing I noticed on the other list is that we may all be using a monitor with our laptops. We were thinking that perhaps this could be the common thread.

What's needed is for someone, and perhaps more than just one person, to demonstrate the problem without a VM or an external monitor. If YOU have the screen saver problem without either antecedents, then please post to the forum and let us know.

I have this problem and I am not using an external monitor nor am I using VMWare.

One thing that also happens here is that sometimes I cannot unlock the screen. Most of the time I get a failure message and a try again and the second time works. Sometimes, I need to close the lid on my MacBook and open again to get it into a state that unlocking the screen works.

Also, unlocking the screen can be very, very slow.

I'm using Parallels, but not VMWare or an external monitor.

For the HotCorners issues - I am not using an external monitor, but I am using Parallels, as I mentioned above.

For the logon issue you just mentioned - I also get that occasionally. I will have slept my MBP, then when I go to log back on, I type my password, the desktop flashes briefly, then the screen goes black again like I'm back at the password prompt but there is no prompt. In this case, I have to close the lid to sleep it again then try a second time. Also occasionally, I will type my password to logon and I will immediately get a second request to logon, which will generally work.
