Moving purchased content from Apple TV to my mac
If you purchase music or other content directly from your Apple TV, can it be moved to an Ipod or Mac?

I figured it out. If you bought anything through your Apple TV you can transfer it to your mac by going to File and clicking on "Transfer Purchases from 'Name of Apple TV'" then from there you can transfer it to iPhone or iPod.
No love for TV shows purchased on AppleTV? I bought a season pass for a show on my TV. All 11 episodes are on the TV, I want to transfer a copy to my computer (maybe take an episode or 2 on my ipod).
I tried the "Transfer purchases from Apple TV" on the computer with itunes that is synced with my appleTV, none of the shows copied over.
I know this won't work with movie rentals, but has anyone tried it with tv show purchases?

Yes I bought the Pilot for TJ Hooker tonight (yeah Yeah I know) anyhoo after watching I went to my mini right clicked on the Apple TV and told it to sync mu Purchases. I went into Itunes.
Yes, this worked just fine for me. I bought a couple of episodes of Dirty Jobs and they automatically synched back to my MacBook Pro.

So if you want to rent a movie that you may want to watch on ATV and also your iPhone while your waiting in an office someplace, the movie needs to be rented on your mac computer and then transferred to ATV?
I want to do just the opposite. The reason why I purchase TV shows directly from iTUNES on my TV is so that I don't have to go through my PowerBook which has such an itty bitty HD. How to I prevent the apparent automatic transfer of the TV shows on my TV to my Powerbook?
I want to move TV shows purchased on the AppleTV as well, but because my media collection is massive and spans two external hard drives, I have my AppleTV configured to stream video instead of sync. Will I have to change it to sync in order to get those files purchased directly on the AppleTV? As it stands now, I don't get the "transfer files from this iPod" as an option in the file menu. (The option is grayed out.)
Good question. I know you HAVE to be using an iTunes library that is synced (somehow) to the AppleTV to transfer purchases. But as far as I know you could just be syncing a couple of songs and some photos.
I haven't made any TV purchases yet to see, but perhaps the "video" tab has to be synced as well for those transfers to happen. Anyone?

Correct, in the case of rentals. You must purchase through iTunes store and then you can move it to your iPod/iPhone or AppleTV at will. Move, not copy.
In the case of purchases - once you purchase a movie through AppleTV it will sync back to your iTunes library and from there you can transfer it to whatever devices you wish.

I figured that in order to get it to sync my purchases back to the Mac I would have to enable "syncing."
I'll quit buying from the Apple TV. More trouble that it is worth since I don't intend on ever doing more with it than streaming my content from my multiple hard drives. I am totally happy with the streaming speed and it plays well with my mac mini, which has been the primary media server in the living room for over a year now.

My question still remains - what if you don't want the movies to automatically sync back to your computer. Uggghhh. There is no room.
If APPLE won't listen and make the TV like an iPOD - then can anyone tell me how to set up an external drive wirelessly to hold my iTunes Library that will sync back and forth between my TV and the external drive?

Well, since my items purchased through iTunes on the Apple TV aren't syncing back to the computer hard drive, I assume that you should turn off syncing and set your Apple TV to stream from your computer. The items that are on your Apple TV stay on your Apple TV.
