Hardware Test Video RAM Error Detected - Costly?

My parents' iMac G5 took a turn for the worse over the weekend. Originally (several months ago) we had to disable sleep to prevent the computer from going into an unresponsive state with the fans blowing like crazy. Now, when they turn the computer on, it starts to boot, but after the screen turns blue to continue loading Tiger, the screen turns a darker shade of blue, and the fans start their usual high speed rotation. The Apple Hardware Test from the DVD that came with the iMac gave us this error:

Video Ram - error detected

* ERROR * CODE * ERROR * CODE *
2NVD/1/4: 2103
* ERROR * CODE * ERROR * CODE

Their iMac (G5 1.6 GHz) is in the serial number range covered in the warranty extension program, but the Mac Genius at the Apple Store told us that the original problem with sleep wasn't covered. It's possible that this problem is covered, but we have no clue if it's in the three-year window from original purchase (this was a gift from my father's boss purchased from eBay). If not, is this expensive to fix?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

MacBook CD/2.0 (week 20 - white), iMac G4/700, Mac OS X (10.4.11), 2 GB RAM, 80 GB hard disk, RSD repaired in Sept.

Apparently the problem is with the VRAM and that seems to be covered by the extension:

Affected systems will exhibit one of the following video- or power-related symptoms :

* Scrambled or distorted video
* No video
* No power

I suggest you contact Apple at 800-275-2273 and tell them what is going on.
Please post back with results,

We took the iMac to the Genius Bar this morning, and unfortunately the original purchase date was 3 years and 4 months ago, so we're no longer under the repair extension program. The repair would have been around $650 with parts and labor -- not worth it for a machine that could very easily go bad again. They decided to bite the bullet and get a refurbished base model aluminum iMac from the Apple Store online.

FYI, I have an iMac G5 (1.8GHz PPC) exhibiting the same error code. I called Apple Support and was told that my computer is still covered under the repair extension program.

I haven't taken it in yet, but thought you should know. Also, the Apple tech asked for my EMC code found on the bottom of the foot stand. Mine is '2008' which he said is still covered.
