Black Macbook Peeling/Chipping

I just noticed that the matte finish is beginning to chip off of 2 corners of my 2 month old SR black Macbook. It has been extremely well taken care of and never scratched or bumped, so I am disappointed that the finish is suddenly peeling off (especially after paying more money for the black finish). It is not terribly bad at the moment, but I am worried that it will progressively get worse. Has anyone had a similar experience that can tell me if it indeed does get worse with time and if apple recognizes the issue and will replace the case?

My 3 month old SR BlackBook is also peeling/chipping. Only the bottom case so far. Sigh.

If you google the issue you'll find that we're not the only ones. I plan to visit an Apple store sometime soon and ask them to replace the bottom case, which from what I've read on other posts, shouldn't be too difficult to convince them to do.

I expect it will get worse. Mine has steadily increased, mostly at the top edge of the bottom case. Not dramatic, but certainly annoying.

One of the reasons I'm waiting is that I'm not sure if I should just lobby for a complete replacement given the chipping, the off-kilter display bezel, the Airport issues, and the DVD Player kernel panics.

More sigh.

Hi all

I own a Black MacBook bought in November '07. The top casing has been peeling from all 4 top corners as well as from the area above the iSight camera. I also am under AppleCare.

Recently, I brought it in to one of the Apple Authorized Service Provider (for a unrelated problem - hard drive failure; Singapore has no offical Apple Store) and enquired about the peeling problem, but the lady at the counter said that the cases weren't covered under any warranty, including AppleCare. She said that the top casing could be replaced for S$250 but I refused, adding the point that I paid extra for the matte and the colour and even AppleCare is not covering it. She then told me to contact Apple directly for solution.

I will be calling Apple in Singapore soon to clarify the matter and hopefully they'll replace it for free. Meanwhile, are there are cases of such peeling that has been resolved?

I have a two week old Penryn blackbook, and I noticed a small imperfection on the back of it ( http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7073095).

Should it get worse, will I have any issues having this fixed under warranty in the future? It's too small of an issue right now but should it start "peeling" or "flaking" (depending on who you ask), I would like it fixed.

My Macbook Black is also affected by the same "virus". It started as a small coating peeling in one of the corners of the bottom case and it has been getting worse and worse, which is annoying since the black finishing was basically what I paid extra for.

Currently I have the bottom case peeled in all 4 corners, on the outline of the battery compartment, on the outline of all the connector sockets (Power cord, USB, and all). Not only this but the top case is now also peeling on the corners and on the screen base... a complete mess!

I contacted the Apple Care Center in Portugal which claims that Apple *IS NOT* even recognizing this as a defect in order to allow the part replacement. Apparently I was the first customer to report such an issue, and the bottom case is not even listed as a replacement part.

My advice is that you try to solve the issue as soon as you notice any problem by contacting your Apple Care Center and making sure that the problem is reported to Apple because from what it seems Apple needs some sort of literally critical mass before any customer with this particular problem can be considered worthy of customer support.

After contacting Apple Customer Support by phone my problem was *COMPLETELY SOLVED*.

They authorized the full repair of the external case (both top and bottom), in the Apple Care Center in Portugal and now I have my Macbook Black in it's full grace once more.

I have to notice that Apple has for sure the best Customer Support in the industry.
