iPhoto crashes AVI IMPORT culprit?

iPhoto 7.1.2 suddenly began crashing at the end of importing from an sd card reader. No previous problems. Error message reads something like "iphoto quit unexpectedly suspect avi import plug-in problem.

Didn't know I had an avi import plug-in, and don't know where to look to remove it. Suggestions?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I don't know of any AVI importer. However, it's a know fact that iPhoto will choke on large avi files when importing directly from a camera. Use Image Capture to upload that file to the desktop and see if you can't import from there. If not see if it will play in Quicktime. If not, download and install Perian. Then try again.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Thanks, Toad. I imported them using Image Capture. Still crashed when I got to the end of the images imported to iPhoto. Went through my whole pictures file and deleted anything that wasn't a .jpeg. Noticed that every time I had a failed import, it seemed to add another picture to the file somewhere. Anyway, after finding all these non-jpeg files and trashing them, I could avoid the crash but lost my very small .avi files.

I'll try your suggestions for those pieces of software.
