How to remove 'back up to disc' prompt when syncing to ipod?

When I attempt to sync up my new itunes music purchases I keep getting a prompt to back up to disc. Unable to transfer tunes from pc to ipod; however, I can transfer the tunes via playlist only, but no artist info is avaiable in the main list. Any clues?
