Welcome to Apple Discussions!!

For some reason, the GUI (Graphical User Interface) is failing to start. Either loginwindow and/or WindowServer has crashed. If you look at your log entries, you may see a "loginwindow[xxx] : exiting to console" message. The lines immediately above that will give the reason. Without knowing what this says, it is impossible to guess what has caused this.

To look at your logs, login at the "login:" prompt then type (carefully)

tail -10 /var/log/system.log

Look for the "exiting to console" message, then copy the lines above that and post them here.

Michael:

Thank you so much for taking time in helping out!! I'm really desperate because I have a project due tomorrow and I really need my computer, so thank you very much!

The typing

tail -10 /var/log/system.log

Is not working, because it seems to be too long for the login:

After I type /var it sends me to

password:

What's wrong? What should I do?

The screen reads the following:

Darwin/BSD (my-name-inserted-here-Comput) 9console)

login:IP packet filtering initialized, divert enabeled, rule-based forwarding enabeled, default to accept, loggin disabled IPv6 packet filtering initialized, default to accept, logging disabled
IP firewall loaded

Any help?

Thank you!!

Sorry. At the "login:" prompt, type your usual short name (that you would normally use to log in, same as the name of your Home folder). Then type your password when prompted. This is not echoed for security reasons: just type it and press return. (That is what I meant when I said 'login at the "login:" prompt').

Then you can type the command I gave you.

Hi Michael,
I have the same problem of Ana.
After I login I type
tail -10 /var/log/system.log
as you suggested.

The console massage is the follow:

anacron[188]: Anacron 2.3 started on 2006-01-16
anacron[188]: Normal exit (0 jobs run)
mDNSResponder: Adding browse domain local
Systemstarter[59]: Operating system enhancements for Virtual PC (167) did not complete succesfully
Systemstarter[59]: The following StartUpItems failed to properly start:
Systemstarter[59]: /System/StartupItems/IFCStart
Systemstarter[59]: - execution of Startup script failed
Systemstarter[59]:/Library/StartupItems/VirtualPCOSServices
Systemstarter[59]: - execution of Startup script failed
configd[39]: Appletalk startup complete

I suppose that the problem began because my son switch off my iMac G5 without shut down the computer ...

I execute the Apple Hardware test and all seems to work propertly.

Could you help me?

Thanks
Stefano
