Canvas & Timeline disappear

Canvas & Timeline disappear

FCE HD 3.5.1 -- Leopard 10.5.2

When I close a project, the timeline and canvas disappear--leaving other elements onscreen--browser, viewer, toolbar, audio meter. Is this normal behavior?

When I reopen a project, the timeline and canvas reappear.

I trashed the preferences with no change.

You need to open a sequence in order for the Canvas & Timeline to appear. Look in your Browser and double click on a sequence.

When I close a project, shouldn't the screen look like it does when I select a new project?

I don't mean that the windows I mentioned have no content; they disappear from the screen.

To close a project you close the browser. Closing the Canvas will close the canvas and the timeline. It will close any open sequences. The project may still be open even if the sequences are closed.

Thank you for your responses.

I go to file > close project -- then the timeline and canvas palettes disappear. So, at this point, there are no sequences in the browser.

When I select "open recent" project from the file menu, the timeline and canvas palettes reappear.

I trust this is clear.

Ok, so when you close your project, your browser is technically closed. Look next to the effects tab, do you see a browser tab? Most likely not. At this point, click File > New Project". That will give you a new Browser and a new sequence.

Yes. You are correct.

I haven't worked with FCE in some time. So, this the timeline and canvas windows disappearing may not be an issue at all. I don't know if this question is completely resolved.

However, when I close a project in Adobe After Effects, all the palette windows remain open--including the project panel and timeline. So, I thought FCE would operate in the same fashion.

The disappearing canvas & timeline is not an issue, nor has it been in your case. This is normal operation for FCE and FCP. The canvas & timeline will only display if a sequence is open. But in order for a sequence to be open, you have to have a project open.
