After installing 10.5.2 I'm noticing that if I click on Airport icon it indicates that it's scanning briefly and then stops. Is this a bug with 10.5.2? Unplugging my Airport Express briefly didn't seem to do anything.
Clearly a problem that Apple has not been able to or interested in fixing... I have a powerbook with 10.4, works fine with our airport express. But my nice new iMac drops signal whenever it gets a chance. I've done all the little fix/download tips and tricks... no go. APPLE PLEASE FIX - I HAVE THIS FANCY (ehem, expensive?!) NEW COMPUTER AND CAN'T EVEN USE THE INTERNET! Come on now guys...
I have a MacBook running 10.4.11 and it is constantly dropping connection. I do not have an apple router. It does this wherever I am accessing wireless. It started about a month or 2 ago, so it is definitely not a 10.5.2 problem.
Just a hunch, but has anyone else noticed that the problem is MUCH worse when you are in an area with lots of other WiFi networks? I live in a building with 200 units and I find that the scanning happens a lot more at home when the list of networks is constantly updating....
I have a brand new time capsule and an airport express in a network, which I can readily access with my old Powerbook G4 running OS 10.4.11.
However, my equally brand new Macbook 2.4GHz running OS 10.5.4 and partner's Macbook 2.1GHz running OS 10.5.4 cannot even connect to the network. IN both cases, after entering the WPA/WPA2 password it times out while trying to connect or claims that the password is incorrect (which it isn't, because the Powerbook can access using it).
I have tried resetting the network a couple of times already. I also tried installing the scanning widget and turning off the menu bar icon, neither of which helped in any way.
I know that there are those that say that the constant scanning is not the issue, but it does appear to be a symptom of whatever is going on.
me too, on a brand new macBook Pro, cannot hold a steady airport connection. AP Grapher shows the 'TX rate' (transmit rate) regularly dropping from 54 to 1Mbit and back.
This was happening to me. Tried everything. AP Grapher does nothing. The problem was fixed when I changed my wireless route setting for the 802.11 g/n/b. Make sure the setting is on both or all, whatever. Just do not use only one signal. Changed mine and there are no problems anymore.
I got so sick and tired of the internet being lost all the time on my MBP that I made the following solution:
- I use the MBP only for iTunes and iPhoto.
- Bought an HP 17' with VISTA and ME to surf the internet.
- If Apple does not come with a fix within two weeks the MBP goes on eBay.
(Good bye everyone, I probably will be banned after this)
After struggling for three months, I had to rule out that my wireless router could be the problem. I bought an Airport Express and the problem persists. So I sent the Macbook for Service. The receptionist cautioned that if the problem does not surface, there will be a diagnosis fee of (approx) USD100! Having spent many times more for the MacBook itself and that I am prepared to lose it all, I agreed.
Five days later, I received a call to say that my "wireless" is not stable and that they are replacing it. The MacBook is now back home and its wireless is working fine. The frequent scan does not happen anymore.
Bottom line: send your laptop for service if the wireless keeps dropping.
Guess what, I am now using the Airport Express. My original D-Link wireless router has malfunctioned. It's havoc trying to share the printer and NasDrive at home now. Wish we have the Geek Squad here. The End never ends.
