Take 2 Update Causes Crashes, Freezes, Glitching

I like the update, I love the new features. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to like my 40gig Apple TV.

Since upgrading, I get:

* Slow, sticky menus. Can't whizz round like before. The selector sticks and then, often five minutes later, skips down.

* Glitchy playback. Every podcast or film I watch glitches at around the same time in (between 3 - 5 mins). Both video and audio stop. If I leave it stuck like that, after another five or more minutes, the audio starts playing and then, eventually, the video.

* Freezes / crashes. Just playing music or looking at photos, the slideshow will stop. Sometimes the screen goes black, sometimes stays stuck on an image.

Through all the above nastiness, my remote still seems to be received as the light on the front flashes. But nothing else happens.

So... I did a factory restore. Ended up back at 1.0 😟

BUT... It was a joy. Back to whizzy menus and a stable OS.

I installed the update to Take 2 again, crossed my fingers and...

All the same problems!

So I've just now rolled back to 1.0 again.

I have a standard UK 40gig Apple TV, no mods, no hacking. I'm very disappointed that the update has now thrown me back to 1.0 since Take 2 absolutely doesn't work on my Apple TV.

And what about the auto-update? Will I have to keep on doing a factory restore?

Any other UK owners experienced similar issues?

I'm having many of the same issues myself. I also am not in the UK and have a 160gb that has over 100gb's of free space and still I'm having these issues.

Here's my post detailing my problem:

Bottom line is Apple would've been better off to delay v2.0 until they had the kinks worked out. (As info here folks, I wasn't one of the ones that was upset and frustrated by the delay in the release of v2.0. No doubt I was anxious, but as with most, the joy of the release is overshadowed by the frustrations of sub-standard software version.)

I am having the EXACT same problems with my 40GB Apple TV. Tonight was my first opportunity to sit down with it post 2.0 update and after 20 minutes of cursing I concluded that Apple TV take 2 is a flat out pig. I will probably go through the downgrade tomorrow because this is absolutely intolerable. Trying to watch a tv show results in a freeze. Music video? Same result. Hopefully it won't be another year before an update.

Thanks very much for your replies! Now I know it's not just me having problems - a mate of mine has a 40gig Apple TV and his is fine with the update. So, I was beginning to think it was just my machine.

Also, hearing that people with the newer 160s have update issues too makes a difference.

Let's hope Apple get to the root of the instability. In the meantime... back to 1.0!

2.0 is indeed very rough around the edges.

1. Rarely I get some video glitches when playing music. The album/display "flip" will produces some weirdness. It doesn't affect music playback so it is purely cosmetic.

2. Music artwork will show as a generic music note icon even though the artwork is present. Again, cometic.

3. The biggie is this molasses slow interface bug. I wasn't affected until a few days after upgrading. I simply unplugged the Apple TV and re plugged it in. (cursing Apple's vanity to not include a power switch as if to say "this thing never crashes") After the restart and flashy movie everything was back to normal. Hasn't come back yet... we'll see.

When it works, which really is most of the time, it is amazing. Buying content from your sofa makes browsing from your computer seem like the dark ages. It gives me that "this is how it's supposed to be" feeling. And this is how it will be. The days of movies and music becoming computer nerdified will be a blip in history.

I have the feeling Apple was in a tough position and decided to pull the trigger. The media would have eaten them alive if they delayed any longer. They weighed that against releasing software that was 90% ready. I'm sure they are working on 2.1 as we speak.

Now, as to why the slow interface bug affects some people all the time and others like myself intermittently, I have no idea. My advice is to pull the plug and let it restart. Sounds low tech but it worked for me. However, I would try and pause any downloads before doing so.

I noticed that Apple TV isn't a very good multi-tasker. For example, when watching video, downloading stops. When syncing the interface slows way down. When doing the first sync (large amounts of data) the interface slows to a crawl. After it has finished syncing things go back to normal.

This maybe the problem some people are having when first getting their Apple TV. On a wireless G network that first sync could take a very long time and tie up the system. I am thinking that after that initial sync things will go a lot smoother... I hope.

Apple TV 1.0 was better at syncing and chewing gum at the same time. But it also wasn't having to dynamically update its database while it was syncing. Take 2 combines synced and streamed files into one database (which impresses me). This might have something to do with it.

Just throwing that out there...

Apart from the horrible top level menu, they seem to have completely screwed up the smmothness of the old interface.

It's either unsresposnive or too responsive depending on what you want to do.

As others have said it seems to stutter at times, especially with the album cover art flipping animation.

This is a real step backwards all round.

Even the store 'coveeflow-esque' animation is naff - far better for the focus of interest to lie in the center than at one edge of the screen.

Getting ready to revert to 1.1 at the minute.

I've experienced this, too -- album cover art almost "sticking" as it flips, as well as weird scrolling lags in the screen saver when set on "Albums."

Not sure if this is a real fix, but it SEEMS to have stopped after I changed my output resolution from 1080p to 720p. (FWIW, I changed back because the picture on 1080p looked a little less sharp than on 720p -- and I have a full HD set.)

YMMV, obviously. Mine could, too.
