Wireless Network proximity problems

When I bought my ipod touch earlier today, it detected my network just fine in the upstairs of my home but I couldn't remember my password. I reset the the router and changed the password (my router is based downstairs), and now my ipod touch can only detect the network if I'm sitting within two or three feet of my router. I can extend my arm away from the router and totally lose the signal. Is there a specific encryption that's best? I'm currently using WPA and the computer upstairs (where my ipod was initially able to detect the original network) works fine.

Since it does work in close proximity to the router, is this an iPod issue or an encryption issue?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My son is having the exact same problem. Up until a week ago he has had no issues connecting to Linksys WRT54GL. Last week we were out of town and he was able to connect to wireless there, but since returning home he has had problems. iTouch detects the network, but an error comes up saying Unable to Connect To Network unless he is within a foot of the Linksys router. Tried the iTouch reset without luck. Other devices (PSP) see the router w/o problems.

I have the same problem with a Linksys WRT54GS. Touch has to be nearly touching the antennas on the router to connect. I tried several public hotspots this evening with the same cr_p reception. My 12 year-old son spent his Christmas money on this hunk of junk. Nice product Apple. Any resolution would be welcomed. It's probably going back to costco Monday. I love my "old fashioned" ipod, but this product is sorely lacking.
