Software Update Times Outs - networking error?

I've been trying to run Apple Software Update. Every time I run it I get the following message:

"A networking error has occurred: timed out (-1001).
Make sure you can connect to the internet, then try again.
Software Update can't check for updateds because of a
networking problem."

My network is fine, and I am able to connect to the internet just fine. I've rebooted and repaired permissions. Any ideas what to do next?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

It seems something is in conflict with the download. I would repair disk permissions, and try to figure out what is causing your network connection to fail. If indeed this is what is going on. You may want to upload the update from Apple's site, and at a time when your network is not as busy. I don't know which you have, yet some are worthless for Macs when they up-date.

Try deleting these three files.
HD/Users/yourhome/Library/Preferences/ com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
HD/Users/yourhome/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.xxxx.plist - the x's represent numbers & letters
HD/Library/Preferences/ com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist

I too have been having this problem, Tom. I have followed your instructions, removed Airport and hardwired the modem to connect to the internet, and I still get this message:

"A networking error has occurred: timed out (-1001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again."

I am connected to the internet.
