New Logic user, new install, no MIDI sound output .. (help)

I'm new to Logic, using Logic Studio in Macbook Pro, plenty of RAM etc.

Everything works ... Software drum track imported from Garageband, works, is editable and playable through my headphones ... audio tracks, ditto ...

except ... no I'm trying to create a bass track. I've enabled monitoring, I've installed the latest driver for the ekeys 49 m-Audio keyboard, etc., and it works fine with Garageband.

But, I cann't get any sound output through Logic. The only way to get sound in thebass track is to write it with the pencil tool in the Piano Roll window .... imagine that! When I write with the pencil, I can play it. When I try to play the keyboard into Logic, I get no sound -- on the track, I get a blank green area that follows the playhead, with two red borders --and nothing records, and nothing comes through.

Can anyone help me? I'm th picture of frustration over this and really needing a hint or two -- thanks!
