He is talking about the ring a caller will hear when they call you. Yes you can do it with your iPhone as long as you are a contract subscriber (not prepaid).

I had a LOT of problems getting mine set up in the beginning because you use a media net ID to set up answer tones, and the iPhone doesn't use media net since it has its own data plan. I spent several hours on the phone with AT&T to get it going but finally got it all ironed out. They originally told me answer tones were not compatible with iphone, which is definitely not true. It works just fine.

Anyhow, you can get it set up by going to:

Hope that helps!

Yeh, I know that I have seen a lot of people say they don't work with iPhone.. you can see that in the forum link you posted. But that simply isn't true, and even some of the people at AT&T will tell you that it isn't. I figured most of my issues were because I bought it opening day and of course that was one of the first things I wanted to set up, but the iPhone being new.. most of the AT&T people just didn't know much about it yet.

Answer tones has nothing to do with the type of handset you have, it is a server feature on the actual network itself having nothing to do with the phone. The only issue I had was the way that AT&T has answer tones set up. They use a media ID to log in, buy, and use the answer tones service. Usually you only have one of these if you have medianet service with your phone. None of us iPhone users have a medianet account/id/password so the system can freak out when you try to register your account.

For me it took talking to about 15 different people, half of which said it wouldn't work, which I didn't believe and then finally I got transferred to someone "high" in the chain of tech support and he knew exactly what to do to make it work. Took him about 3 minutes and bam I was good to go.

All this trouble to subject callers to our music preference.. haha

The last post in the thread is a forum moderator saying just that.

WirelessForeman .."As it has been stated, Answer Tones is a service that is offered and has no bearing on the type of device being used."..

Answer Tones will work with the iPhone.
