I just upgraded my MacPro (bought with 2x1gb) with 4x2gb dimms. I purchased them from (i've purchased from them many times, always with great success).

But after reading this post, I should just fill the darn thing with 2gb dimms and ditch the 1gb dimms???

    How fun!

I wonder if 800mhz ram will work in the older Mac Pros (pre 2008) that run 667 stuff. This way if I upgrade to a 8 core later it won't cause issues.

Usually this works out just fine. The 800Mhz memory will for now just run at 667Mhz. All memory will take over the speed of the lowest-speed-dimm.

I just ordered my Mac Pro and I'm looking into a memory upgrade for under $500. I checked out OWC Mac Pro memory and they have 4 x 2GB for $416, but I know crucial memory is a good company and they have 2 x 2GB for $468. For the difference in memory and cost which one is better to get. I want to be sure I'm getting a worry free product.

Also look at memory from Trans International
    8GB(4 x 2GB) is $398.00

Well, TallmanA, I've had my 12 gigs (6 x 2g's) installed along with the original 2 x 1gig chips in my new Mac Pro for about a month now and performance is just great. I did order from OWC and could not be happier with the quickness of the shipping and, so far, the quality of the product. Thought this might help since it's the exact product from the exact source you are inquiring about.
