I've had my 2nd Gen shuffle since 10/30/06 and use it daily for at least 2hours. I charge it every 4days or so, or whenever I change content (I listen to audiobooks).
Only once ran battery down accidentally leaving it playing with earphones connected overnight.

No hint of battery degradation (more frequent charging required), yet.

I've had my 2g Shuffle for not quite a year... I use it exclusively for fitness purposes, so it's only used when I'm at the gym or out on a run, etc. It's typically on for an hour, maybe two, at a time. I can use it for probably 2 weeks (depending on frequency of use, of course) before my orange light starts up and I start to worry it might shut off on me. I also keep it in my car 90% of the time, so it does get hot/cold, etc.

No problems with it whatsoever. Apple says you should get 12 hours of life per charge. Not sure of the entire lifespan of the device...guessing that will vary based on your usage habits, how it's stored, etc. I'll use mine til it refuses to turn on anymore.

I purchased an ipod shuffle 2nd gen in March 2007. It died in September 2007. There is a one year replacement window so I got a new one. The new one died March 2008, just after the warranty expired. So mine have been less than 6 months. When my player dies, there is no light or anything. After charging it, it does not even respond. I used it about 4-5 times per week for an hour each use, mainly while working out. I was extremely careful when I released the player from the computer making sure to eject every time. I love the ipod, but i have no luck with length of life for the player.

Honestly, at $79, even if it crapped out after a year I'd still consider it a good value...breaks down to about $6.50/mo, can't complain about that for the smallest mp3 player available!

And, now, with the $49 price, the cost effectiveness is even better... my 10/30/06 received 2nd gen is still going strong with average daily use of ~ 2hr.

That's unusual... are you sure you didn't get moisture in it during your workout. THAT would cause the symptoms you described.

Be aware of the possibility and orient the shuffle so that sweat doesn't run down the earphone cable and into the earphone jack, or that the control buttons don't get drops of sweat on them.

BTW, were you using the standard iPod earphones?
