Is this a "MacBook Pro Santa Rosa"

Go to Apple menu > About this Mac. If your Processor is 2.2 Ghz or 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, you have a "Santa Rosa" MBP with a 4 GB RAM max. If the processor speed is 2.16/2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo, it's pre-Santa Rosa with a 3 GB max. And if it's a Core Duo (no 2 in there) the max RAM is 2 GB.

Click on the Apple Logo (left side of top menu bar), then click "About This Mac" and then click "More Info..." - This will open System Profiler. Click on Hardware in Contents on the left hand side - On the right if you see either of "Model Identifier: MacBookPro3,1" or "Bus Speed: 800 MHz" - you have a Santa Rosa MacBook Pro that can handle 4Gb RAM.

Just for the record, there isn't really any such thing as a a "Santa Rosa" MBP, as none of them include all the components required by the Santa Rosa specification. I appreciate that it's a useful shorthand for identifying the Core 2 Duo models though 🙂

Seriously, far fewer people can relate to Merom. But I'll bet lots more refer to Penryn than "Santa Rosa Refresh", as the Penryn-containing platform is technically code-named. In any case, that's all these things are - code names for convenience.

I dispute that assumption. I think they are called that by Apple to detract from the Microsoft monopoly.
