You can use any stereo. Get a plug from the iPod headphone jack (3.5mm) to two RCA jacks and plug them into the AUX inputs on the stereo.
Then you can have 4 speakers spread out instead of 2 little ones 6 inches apart.
This really is your cheapest solution and you could try it with realtively little outlay with your existing receiver I would imagine provided the connections are easily accessible.
Don't get sucked in by wattage figures for either amps or speakers alone, as it is neither a guarantee of quality or loudness, though in general for a similarly designed amp the higher the output figures the louder it will go.
The ipod with cable to an amp/receiver and speakers is likely to give you far more bang and loudness for the buck compared to relatively compact docking stations but it's obviously tricky to know how loud you need in your real life situation.
The B&W is impressive however, but has a price tag to match.
I picked one up today and the sound is very good quality and I have no need to play at full volume in a domestic environment, but ultimatley it won't be able to compete in sound scale to separate amp and good dedicated speakers.
As a compact solution it is very nice.
Check out the reviews at the Apple store.
