Digital Static Noise on Recording - Core Audio Bug?

I'm using a G5 DP 2.3, and when recording from the USB Audio Codec*, digital noise/static kicks in after a seemingly random period of time, anything from 3 mins to 15 mins. This occurs with any audio application.

The 'workaround' is to go into Audio MIDI Setup, and change the sample rate for USB Audio Codec to 48 KHz (rather than the standard 44.1 KHz). That seems to stop it in any application, except GarageBand, which changes the sample rate back to 44.1 KHz when it opens.

Anyone have any further news on this??

*should clarify - USB Audio Codec is what's used for USB audio input devices, e.g. USB turntable (Pro-Ject III USB in my case) and some USB mics. The issue doesn't occur when recording from the computers own (non-USB) audio input, or from a (FireWire) audio interface.

I also have this static bug on my brand new 2.4 ghz macbook, running 10.5.2 with all updates. It occurs for me when running a USB mixer into garageband, it will record for a short while and then be completely static, and has a noticeable reverb that is the same volume level. I also had issues with audio playback through the mixer, in addition to occasionally getting a memory error (don't remember exactly what it was, we were in the middle of recording) to the effect of not having enough RAM, which doesn't make sense as I've got 2GB, and have heard of people with 4GB getting this issue.

Hello, APPLE? THIS IS CLEARLY A MASS BUG IN THE SOFTWARE! Little help? Tomorrow's Tuesday...

Yeah, I tried everything I can think of, it's most certainly a software issue. It records fine for a little while then becomes static garbage in a short while, usually no more than a minute or two. This is SO FRUSTRATING! I'm going to have to get logic now to record, which is stupid because i bought this mac because it came with GB, where I could record.

Yes, I know that any serious recording shouldn't be done in GB, but I'm cheap and it's not like I'm trying to get radio play, I just want a log of my music. BAH!

FIX THIS APPLE!

I see folks are still having this problem... i checked the message boards several months ago and folks were having tons of problems with this.... I've not been back on here lately, but it seems that there is some major problems here... if anyone knows what apple has to say about this, i'd be very interested!!! I think, from what i've read, that it's definitly a problem with the software and it began a while back with one of the apple updates...

surely they can do something to fix this!!!!!

Please help!

I am having the same problem as all of you guys. I have a Alesis USB mixer which when used with GB gives that typical horrendous static in the recording. So I actually called up apple techsupport today, and after putting me on hold for 1 hour they finally responded. They apparently have know clue about this problem. That guy on the tech support was giving me some crap about making a new user and checking if the problem persists.

I have had this problem for over 2 YEARS with my MacBook Pro. It doesn't matter which USB audio device I use. I have used an Edirol UA-25, A ZOOM G9.2TT, and borrowed others to test it...

No one can tell me anything that fixes it. The only suggestions I ever get, are the obvious things I've already tried dozens of times in and in multiple configurations. I'm not an idiot. I know how to trouble shoot. I'm tired of empty, 1st grade suggestions. And I know when it comes down to Apple. Firewire works, but my firewire device is huge and clunky and I can't take it with me without a pickup and a crew 😉

Fix your USB audio Apple, and get back to us! Pretty please?

I think i posted this somewhere on here before, but this option has worked for me...and in garageband--at least for now. I have a "tube MP" usb device that i got and i was having this static problem. For some reason, which i do not understand, i've not had the issue lately by going in and changing to the 48KHz setting. Maybe i'm opening garageband first, then changing the setting? I don't know, but i do know i have to change the setting ever time i use it and i've got now static now for some time.

There is no doubt that something is wrong on Apple's end. It's been extremely disapointing for me to find that after switching to Mac because of the "user friendly" aspect that i've actually had more problems recording audio via usb with my mac than i ever thought about having with my PC.

What's even more unbelievable to me is that such an obvious problem would be ignored by Apple. Makes me kind of want to call up some PC companies and give them a suggestion for a real funny comercial for their PC: Have some guy speaking into a mic about how awesome apple is and about half-way through the commercial this horrible static sound just starts pumping over his voice... you get the picture.

I don't think it's Apples responsibility to have third party products work. I have three interfaces from Alesis, M-Audio and Presonus all are working and reliable. All three had either firmware, driver or software rewritten to be compatible with the newest versions of os x and garageband.

Maybe Apple should have given manufactures more warning that updates could cause incompatibilities but in the end if the manufacture wants to sell a product to a apple user they should make sure it works first.

I am seeing the same problem. It has become crippling and has me just about ready to trash the Mac and go back to Windows. It's cause me to waste an enormous amount of time redubbing failed audio recordings. It's good for a minute or a few minutes, and then it becomes highly distorted. The problem has occurred with two different MacBook Pros, with a Samson C01U USB microphone, and with an entirely different audio setup using a USB mixer and analog mics.

Does Apple every respond to these forums? Does anyone there care?

Thank you guys.. now I know I am not a complete Idiot.
I also am rather good in seaching for mistakes... and I nearly brought back my Samson G-Track.

random distorted sound.. not controlable while recording... endlessly reconnecting the mic and redoing recordings....

I hope there will be a fix soon in the new awaited Update
