Can't burn DVD-RW - Finder misrecognises as CD-R

I'm trying to burn 3.8 GB of data to a DVD-RW disc, but it isn't working.

I created a Burn Folder in the Finder and when I select Burn it says to insert a blank disk with a capacity of at least 3.8 GB. So, I insert a DVD-RW of 4.7GB capacity. A dialog appears containing a DVD-RW icon, saying "You inserted a blank DVD. Choose an action from the pop-up menu or click Ignore." I select "Open Finder" from the pop-up menu, and then click "OK". This dismisses the dialog, and immediately the previous dialog asking to insert a blank disk is replaced by a dialog asking "Are you sure you want to burn the contents of "My Data.fpbf" to a disk?" This third dialog shows a CD-R icon, not DVD-RW. I click on "Burn" and it dismisses the dialog, and shows the Burn progress window. Immediately, it gives the error ""My Data.fpbf" is too large to fit on the disc. Remove some files and try again."

Now, I can only conclude from this that the Finder is misrecognising my DVD-RW as a CD-R disc, and therefore refusing to burn 3.8 GB of data to the 4.7GB disc.

I've tried mounting the DVD-RW disc first, without choosing to burn directly from the burn folder window. This puts another burn folder on the desktop called "Untitled CD.fpbf", with a CD-R icon. Same error message returned if I drag the same files into this burn folder and select Burn.

At the same time, Disk Utility always recognises the disk as a 4.4GB DVD-RW disk, with "Capabilities: CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD-RW". Unfortunately, Disk Utility will only burn from a disk image file, not a Finder burn folder!

So, how exactly do I burn a Finder Burn Folder to a DVD-RW disc, then?
