Network Error -1001

I have a MacBook that is suddenly unable to make certain connections wirelessly.

I am able to connect to the internet just fine and browse around, but when I try to search for Software Updates or even upload pics to Flickr, I get a notice that I have a Network error (-1001).
I have tried 2 separate wireless access points at work with no luck with either. I have another Macbook here that did find and load Software Updates from my airport quickly and without problem.

Network Diagnostics says I have no problem with my internet connectioin. I have run the Disk Utility to repair permissions and Disk Warrior, but the problem persists.

Any ideas?

I notice that others are having problems connecting to the Software Update...but not the internet...

No one knows of a fix for this?

Yes - I just had the same problem when I upgraded my Mini to 10.5. Software update was able to connect to the internet and tell me I needed to install a load of updates, but when I tried, I got this; "A networking error has occurred: Cannot open file (-3001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again."

Clearly this is absurd and likely to lead less-computer-savvy people to want to throw things out of high windows and curse Apple roundly for the stupid contradiction. Apple - please fix this!

A work-around is to go to http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ - download what you need (listed in the software update window) and install each package separately - I just did that. It takes longer and it's a bit more 'techy' than it really should be - but it does work.

Hi there,

If your not getting internet connectivity through Safari or Software Update or iTunes as well, but you CAN with Firefox etc.. then it's possible that you have an *invalid web proxy*.

Go to your Dock, open *System Settings*, open Networking, if you're using Airport, Double click your Airport in the list (Show: Airport), Go to the Proxies panel, uncheck *Web Proxy* if it's checked. Click *Apply Now*.

Lastly, click on the TCP/IP panel and *RENEW DHCP Lease*.

I hope this fixes your problem!

Hi,

I am getting this error message too when trying to run Software Update.

I'm tempted by Richard's suggestion but am nervous about 'trashing' any files that I don't fully understand.

Could someone advise if this is a safe thing to do - i.e If I copy this file before trashing, and put it back afterwards if this approach doesn't work how much harm could I do ?

Thanks
