Files showing modified date of december 31 1969

I recently installed Word X and when I open files using this program, the modified date shown on them is December 31, 1969! Even some files that I haven't opened are showing this date.

The system time is correct, though, and doesn't change when I restart the computer, so I'm sure it's not a battery problem. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

Welcome to Apple Discussions!!

December 31, 1969, or more specifically "Thu Jan 1 00:00:00 GMT 1970" corresponds to the internal time being zero. As you obviously suspected, the most common cause is a flat battery, so it is strange you are having this problem.

I have Office X installed an it hasn't had this problem. Did you first uninstall the Trial version?

No, I didn't uninstall the trial version first... I just uninstalled it, though, and opened a new file with my non-trial version, made a change, saved and closed it, and it is also now showing the December 1969 date.

I forgot to mention that the documents I am opening are located on another (Windows) computer, which I am accessing via a network. I'd like to transfer them all to my iBook, but if the dates are all changed to Dec. 1969, that is of little help to me.

Well there have been reports about problems if the trial version wasn't completely un-installed before installing the full version, but I have no first hand knowledge of this: I never had the trial version.

You may find related posts elsewhere on the forum – I'd try that first. But in the absence of any other approach, I would be inclined to uninstall all Office files and then start from scratch with a new install. There are a number of Read Me files which tell you where all the bits are installed: it would be worth going through these to make sure you have everything.

Sorry I can't be more help, but continue trying local documents until that works!

After using Panther on a Powerbook for 1 1/2 years I bought 2 iMacs and upgraded the laptop to Tiger (latest updates all around). I relied on using finder to copy from OS X to DOS/Windows FAT32 shared drives and now files appear with a zero date on the PC's.

There are no changes in the home LAN, the date & time on the PC's are correct. The problem is the same copying with iView Media Pro (for images) or using the finder.

HELP! This has rendered a lot of mac hardware useless!
