Daily Kernel Panic involving IOATABlockStorage - Any ideas?

For four days in a row, once per day, and with nothing I can pin it to as being a corresponding factor as far as what I was doing on the machine at the time, I have experienced a kernel panic. The latest changes, which I find it hard to be a coincidence since I have not experienced a kernel panic in months, and never with this cause, are the following updates made on 2/18:

2008-02-18 09:03:02 -0600: Installed "iLife Support" (8.2)
2008-02-18 09:11:04 -0600: Installed "Mac OS X Update" (10.5.2)
2008-02-18 10:13:33 -0600: Installed "Leopard Graphics Update" (1.0)

The first kernel panic after that was just over 24 hours after the update, and the subsequent panics have all been similarly timed, as you can see from the panic reports below, but nothing that makes the time specific to another event. Each time the machine was restarted immediately, so it's not an exact interval of 24 hours, but the timing is still suspicious. Any ideas?

I would guess at some disk corruption (either a logical problem or physically some block(s) which have become unreadable in a catastrophic way). The place that the crash occurred seems to point to IO in a block-structured ATA device, which would likely be a hard disk.

Boot from your install disk and test and repair the disk. See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh1018.html for some instructions. If it finds damage it needs to fix - or indeed you get the kernel panic during its run-through of your disk - that could very well be the issue.

Feb 25, 2008 6:51 AM in response to Ted Harper

Ok, I ran the Repair utility from my Leopard DVD, and all drives came back with no errors, and the S.M.A.R.T. status verified. I suppose that's good news, though I was hoping you were correct, heh. I see some forum posts in various sites of people having kernel panics because of a change in Leopard with tolerance of spin up/down speeds from sleep, but from months ago, and I have not had problems until the day after updating to 10.5.2, so I don't know if that's a red herring or not. In any case, I did not see a solution to those user's issues either.

Feb 27, 2008 5:48 AM in response to Derek Jones3

I am having the same problem on my dual G5. I don't recall if it started happening before or after I upgraded to 10.5.1. But I did not have the problem with 10.4

The crashes happen in the night. Sometimes there is a KP report dialog when I restart and an entry in the panic.log but most often there is not. I only know it is crashed because the fans are blasting like the space shuttle.

Would be curious to learn if you discover a fix. Will happy reciprocate.

Today's panic log follows:

I have not solved it, but have possibly unravelled an additional clue. The past 2 days I have not had a kernel panic. The difference? I have not been putting my computer to sleep when I go to bed. I was going to give it another day or two, and then try putting it to sleep again and see if it comes back before drawing the conclusion that they are directly related, but you might give that a shot as well (disabling sleep).

Mar 12, 2008 10:40 PM in response to Derek Jones3

Looks very familiar! My output below.

The panic occurs upon sleep, not every time (but almost!) I put the machine to sleep or I allow it to sleep automatically. Shutting down is okay. The machine makes sounds like it is about to sleep, I hear the disk spin appropriately, but the fans don’t stop. A few times one or both of the monitors have not switched off. Left alone it gets hot and the fans go nuts. Naturally the machine is non responsive without a forced shutdown and restart.

It took me a while to recognise the pattern so I can’t pinpoint a software update that started it. Disk utility found no problems with my disks, a mixed blessing as the problem persists.

This is well outside my experience of Mac problems - any tips or pointers to narrow it down to a cause or solution are extremely welcome. Are there any logs I should be digging out for clues?
