Hi Steve,

Do you remember installing any third-party applications? Strange that it would change like that on its own. There is an article on MacOSXHint which documents how to change the default search engine used by way of vi editor - a bit of a hassle if you're not comfortable with vi.

As an alternative, you can make use of aliases in the address bar with add-ons such as Sogudi and Keywurl.

It looks like something's become messed up.
Go to your library in your home folder and drill to the folder labeled preferences. Take the safari prefs and trash them, (they'll be called com.apple.Safari.plist). Restart Safari and see if that sorts your problem.

The reason I asked about the ru is twofold, a) because there is a 'ru.lproj' folder in the Safari package. I was going to suggest that you delete it temporarily, and b) because I was looking for a mention of google.ru as opposed to google.com in the localizable strings file.

Try the trashing prefs file first though.

Unless some body knows how to do that via the terminal I think you've reached the end of the road on that point. Your only other option I think for that kind of built in functionality is another browser. I know for a fact that Omniweb does it, it just isn't free.
