Stuffit Error 17540 (Really old files)

I have a Stuffit archive I made back in 1997 which I am trying to open now. It would have been done on system 7.5. They are .sit files. When I try to extract, it creates the folder (which looks like it's named right) but then gives error #17540 and can not continue.

Any idea how I can get into these?

Thanks.

Check out this program, The Unarchiver - http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/apps/unarchiver.html
Someone suggested it to me on another forum and it seemed to be working.

Problem now is that i put a password on the sit and have no idea what it was. It's hard to remember what a 10 year old password is.

Does anyone know how to circumvent a sit pw? I heard you can maybe do it with a hex editor.
