iMovie ('08) doesnt import from Sharp DV camcorder (anymore)

Hi,

I have a six years old Sharp VL-PD3 camcorder with Mini DV tapes (digital recording).
My old iMac with (I guess) one of the first versions of iMovie worked well together with this camcorder.

Now I have a new iMac with iMovie'08 and I can't import videos from my camcorder anymore.
When I connect the camcorder with the iMac by Firewire cable, the iMovie Import window opens, I can control the camcorder-tape from my Mac, but nothing will be imported.

In "Import Automatic" Mode, the tape does rewind (as it should), then starts playing, but then stops again immediately.

In "Import Manually" Mode, I can start the tape by clicking "Import", but the tape is playing back only in the camcorder. Nothing arrives in the Mac.

Any clues?

just for info:

By sheer luck I found a way to force iMovie'08 to import from tapes played back in my Sharp camcorder:
I connect the camcorder by FW with the iMac, then I switch the camera on in "Record" mode. The iMovie import window shows the picture caught by the camera. Then I click "Import" in iMovie and quickly switch over the camcorder from "Record" to "Playback" - and - surprise! - iMovie continues capturing the footage from the tape.
